Hi,
In Switzerland is everything basically so near that you are always near to shops and markets. Rather important than the markets is where will your working place be – even the train drive between Zug and Zurich is also only 25min . Other relevant question is will your kids need international school? There is a good international school in Baar, canton Zug. That one is also not as expensive international schools in canton Zurich.
Town of Zurich is expensive but there are numerous smaller towns near Zurich. Just as an example Thalwil is only 10 km from Zurich and has train connection basically every 10 minutes. Pending of the needs you should consider which side of the Lake Zurich you would look for the home. Basically from the Thalwil side are great connections to Zug, mountains and many international schools. On that side is also a high way. The other side of the Lake, where is for example Mailen is more posh, have more direct sun light but should you need to travel to Zug or that direction you would always need to take the ferry to cross the lake.

About the cost of flats you can check homegate.ch. At the moment there are surprisingly many free flats! Beside the rental costs for living you need to consider the tax level. In the end the sum of rent and taxes is more or less the same. In towns where the taxes are lower are often higher rents and the other way. Towns of Zurich is through an exception; Zurich has high taxes and high rents and other prices also much higher starting from coffee price in a coffee shop, hairdresser etc. Prices in supermarkets are the same thought.

Did that help anything? There is also englishforum.ch where is very active forum and also lot of information for expats. You should read that too :)
