" Hi all, I am thinking about taking a post-doc position at the National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu. I have never been to Taiwan, so I am looking for any information I can get about the area / city and lifestyle. Specially, I am interested in how difficult it is to find housing. Thanks, Steve. "

I live in Taipei and work part time in Hsinchu. I think housing in Hsinchu should not be too difficult but I have no idea of the cost. The university may be able to help you with housing. Most of the expat community lives in Taipei which is about 75 minutes north on the freeway. Bus service is at least every 20 minutes during the day and there is also train service. Alan

" You will enjoy HsinChu. I have been spending about 50% of my time there for the last 8 years. It is a good town of about 500K people. Very easy to get around and has a good sized expat community that tends to congregate in downtown pubs. Many teachers from US and Canada as well as Science Park folks from US on business. Housing is available. Fairly high-end complexes such as Holland Village run about $600 USD for 2-3 bedrooms in high rise building with parking. I would think that the university would be providing housing for you in their dorms but if not let me know. I can put you in touch with some folks who can steer you in the right direction for off-campus. Good Luck, Colin "
