I signed a 1 year lease for a studio apartment in Fengyuan District on Dec. 10. Does anyone know what penalties are for breaking a lease? I am moving to a different city and the commute would be too far if I stayed in Fengyuan.

Hi,
Did you sign a rental contract? The penalty should be specified in the lease agreement.

My experience has been that you will lose your deposit if you break the lease, and that the landlord must pay you two months worth of rent if he breaks the lease.

That has only been my experience.

Another thought: Try talking to the landlord and explain that your situation is unavoidable, you really hate to break the lease, etc. Sometimes they will be willing to work with you if you talk with them, especially if you can give them as much advance notice as possible.
