I am married to a Tanzanian with 2 small children aged 3 years and 5 months. We are currently living in the UK but plan to move to Tanzanian after my husband finishes his studies. I am very concerned about malaria having caught it myself on previous visits to TZ in Tabora, Dar and Kigoma. I have been researching rates and the risk seems very low in Arusha so I think this may be a good place to move to. We plan to visit later is year to look round the area, see houses and schools... Can anyone advise on malaria risks in the area?

Hi
Dar is also a good place if you live in the main residential areas with not much greenery around such as Masaki, Mikocheni, Upanga. A few precautions that I took when I was there: have mosquito net in all windows and doors, wear pants and long sleeve tops and use mosquito repellents regularly as well as mosquito incense sticks at home. Hope this helps

We are moving to Arusha this month, after four years of living in Dar es Salaam. Malaria was a big question for us with two kids roughly the same age, but we are assured that any malaria in Arusha is normally when people have been elsewhere and contracted it, then developed the symptoms once returning. Unlike Dar where it is rife, so it is a great incentive for our move.

Hi,
My family's been living in Arusha for over 2 years now. When we moved here, my kids were 2 and 4. We don't take any medications, yet, knock on wood, never got malaria here.
I don't really know the malaria rate in Arusha, but I know that we do have many mosquitoes during the rainy season. The thing is that I apply insect repellent on kids in the evenings during wet season and make sure that no holes in mosquito nets. So far, we are doing fine.
The number of mosquitoes in Arusha is nothing compare to Dar. Dar may have more to offer as far as dining, entertainment or kiddie resources, but Arusha has the weather that makes you happy to be in Africa.
Good luck!
