Hi all
I am looking for a English or American business partner in Thailand. I have been to Bangkok and Patong a few times now and love the people and country very much. I have a very succesful business in the uk (printing) but wish to expand into imports to the uk, I am looking for someone with ideas to help with this. Does anyone have any suggestions...i think the tee-shirt and shoe business has been flooded now so I am looking for something different. Maybe something in the sports industry but not essential. I can offer the finance for a venture and have the business accruement, what i need from someone in thailand is the ability to research and above all to trust them fully. I am looking to retire to thailand in about 7 years and although I am financially secure at the moment, I want to come to thailand with no worries at all. If anyone has any suggestions please post here with your email address and if I am interested i will email you back. I have a few ideas myself, so after a few conversations with a person I build a trust with, I will come over and discuss them. Hope to here from someone soon bye.

Howdy,
I'm an American expat who has been in Thailand for about 24 years. I am currently retired, but might be interested in doing some research on various project ideas.
Aside from that, what do you think about exporting printing from Thailand to the UK? I do know someone who will be interested in that. Although he is not English or American, he has been in the printing business all of his 40 odd years and is reliable and trustworthy. He has been exporting printing to the USA for many years now, and has his own company.
If there's any interest in either of these possibilities, email me at caughtintheact@thailandexpat.com or caughtintheact@ethailand.com

Cheers/Caught

Hi Caught,
Thanks for coming back to me so soon.
Regarding printing exported from Thailand, the problem will that is the silly turn around times in the uk at the moment and the lack of control from here. The uk market place has changed over the past few years budjets are tight and because I deal with only blue chip accounts (you tend to get paid by blue chip) I cannot afford to upset my business in the uk. I was thinking running in tandum with my uk business.
Maybe import golf balls for the uk market...there is a massive call for Titleist Prov1 and Titleist Prov1x they are very expensive in the uk market place and maybe if I can get them manufactured in the far east, I could package them here through my current operation. Again this is not static I am looking for anything to import and make a pretty penny with a expat partner.
Thanks again

There might be a manufacturer of Titleist golf balls in Thailand. They have a manufacturing/distribution center here. There are only a few companies (about 3) that are promnoted by the Board of Investment. Normally the first question asked is "how big is the order" There are some tricks in dealing with the ethnic Chinese here (who own most of the businesses). The major problems in sourcing here are timeliness and quality control. Beating down the price too much is not good either, as that can cause more problems. At any rate, I am available for research, but not for sourcing, as some physical problems make it too difficult to run around visiting factories.

Hi caught!!!
Thanks for coming back so soon again.
It sounds good if they do have a manufacturing plant there in Thailand. Obviously the quality is a must for the balls and I understand that you cannot visit the factories yourself. I would be quite prepaired to visit myself as I am coming over in February anyway. The Pro v1 balls are the tip of the iceberg really as if they went well over here I would start on the other quality balls.
The crunch is the price of course, if i was to place a small 30,000 balls at the outset would you be able to find a price for these for me?. Also could you find the price for distribution to the uk?.
Doing this for me would certainly be worth your while if it came off, having someone in Thailand who i can trust to organize things for me is a must and i am sure that being there for a long time you would be able to find someone who can do all the leg work for you. providing the quality and price is kept to a good standard, we all can make some money out of this. I hope to hear from you soon thanks Paul.

Looks like the corporate people don't want direct contact as they don't even mention the name of the local company on their web site, only the location. You will probably be better off making contact yourself on this one in the United Kingdom:
Acushnet Ltd.
Caxton Road
St. Ives
Cambridgeshire PE27 3LU
England
Phone:44-1-480-301114
Fax:44-1-480-492108
Email: ukoffice@acushnetgolf.com
It's the only worldwide location that shows an email address. If you can get a phone number foir the Thai operation aand/or email address, I can handle the Thai language part of it.

Paul, From my experience in dealing with large corporations, if you don't keep bugging them they may never answer, hopefully not so in this case. When I don't get a reply in a reasonable time (by my requirements), I just keep resending them the email and telling them that I am not going away, so please answer. It usually works. Especially when they see THIS IS MY THIRD REQUEST!!!! in huge letters at the top of the message. Alternate methods: Complain to higher authority (if there is one) Start phoning them as well. Good lick on getting a response, and thanks for keeping me informed. Cheers/Caught

Paul,
I've located contact info for both. One has email, not sure about the other...may have to call to see if they have email.
Beforedoing this, I think you should send me a list of questions you want answered, and provide some details on quantities for the future. If the quantities are either too large or too small it's better to find out before spending a lot of time on this. Once I have the questions and see how cooperative they are, I can let you know and if thir English is at all proficient, I will put you in direct contact.

Hi caught!!!
Sounds good, here are a list of questions for you to ask
1. Do they already distribute to the uk
2. Do they have any objections of me re-badging and branding in the uk.
3. would it be possible to get samples sent to me
4. Could they send technical information on the balls
5. Quantity is a difficult one as it depends on the price. prehaps you could ask for price breaks....say 5000 balls and in 5000 breaks as in 5k,10k 15k and so on.
I would be interested in taking on 5k at the right price and if they went well (most of them would be distributed as samples to golf clubs in the uk) then the quantity could be vastly increased...who knows 100k 500k .
I have a company that would import them for me so the price would be from exworks.
thanks for you help on this...I won't forget you if this works.
cheers
Paul

Paul,
First, I've emailed the companies in English. If I get a reply in somewhat readable English within the next day or two, I will contact them by phone.

If they do not respond, I will try twice more by email followup. Then I will call them.

This will determine their level of responsiveness and the extent of their English language ability. This will help determine whether or not you can deal directly with them in the future.

It will probably be about 3-4 more days before any replies will come in. I forgot that we have a long weekend this weekend as today 5 Dec is a holiday, and also 10 Dec is a holiday.

Hi Caught!!!
Thats fine, King's birthday and all that, I quite understand. I will not be shipping until next year anyway so time is not important. I have done some research on the company Toppoint and these balls seem to be the best option. they conform with the R&A rulings in the uk so if you would look into these ones in preference.
Cheers
Paul

Finally got an answer from one company after sending out three emails three times each. However, they wanted to know the name of the company in the UK. I just responded that I have been asked to keep it quiet until I get the replies to the questions. Now to wait and see if they reply.

Paul,
The reply from the company is "Please advise your full address and telephone
number in U.K. so we can send golf ball sample for test. Regarding of price quotation, we will email you soon."

It's probably time for you to get in direct contact with them, so if you email me so I know your email address, I will provide the rest of the information. I think the time has come to go a bit private on this one.

Hi Paul.... i am in Bangkok at the moment.
i am an engineer originally but like you would like to settle in Thailand but am not sure what to do here.
I plan to be here for the next 2 or 3 months so let me know when you are next in Thailand and we can have a chat.
I think it would be better to meet if possible rather than talk on here.
Dave.

Hi My name is Nick Struan and I just read your message. May I suggest that you contact someone I know who has all the correct contacts in Bangkok. He has other business interest in Thailand and may not be interested in taking a part in your venture, but his experience in the area is invaluable and you can trust his advice. He is in Perth, Western Australia at present and you can contact him by E-mail to: phoenixalliance@bigpond.com his name is Frank Nilsen. If no luck send me an E-mail to struanint@hotmail.com and I can forward the message to him. good luck. Nick Struan

Paul,

I've got some associates that do high end Thai spa products (body oils, fragrances, etc.) and have export experience.

I've got some others that do more industrial type products.

Regards,
tsb
