What is your age? If you are 50 years or older you can get a Thai retirement visa. However there are financial requirements you must meet to do that also. The Thai embassy in Paris is known to be hard to deal with for visas (not friendly) but they are the place to start asking questions about a visa. Here is a place to discuss Thai visa and other Thai subjects. Use this URL www.thaivisa,com. You can join as a member for free and post questions on that forum.. One thing I do not think you will be able to open a bar of any type as employment without a Work Permit is prohibited unless you are employed by a Thai company or have a great deal of money o invest in a business and hire 4 Thai employees. As a non Thai, you can only hold a maximum of 49% in a business, and one or more Thais must hold the other 51%.

Expat Opening a bar in Thailand... Thousands. Thailand has changed for the worse over the last three years. Might have something to do with the attitude of those in the military who are now in power. Thai's have learned to live on credit during the good times. Money is getting tight and tourism is slowing down as many tourist murders go unreported or reported as "fell off balcony." Koh Tao murders are rife. Go to Vietnam.

It is possible hat the reasons you did not see that type of bar in Bangkok is because here is not enough demand for that kind of bar. There uses with ed to be a number of places like that in Bangkok, but now the places with just music are in the hotels, but I can only speak for Bangkok. There may be a market elsewhere in Thailand. My suggestion is to come here and talk to bar owners and customers. You can also visit www.thaivisa.com and check the forums where people are frequently online from just about every province. You can also get advice on visas.

I was going to chiang mai and run a small hotel but the amount of money you had to have was prohibitive. The visa laws there with vida runs every 90 days is ridiculous. The big thing i didnt like is the amount of foreigners that get beaten and murdered thers nearly every week there is a serious beating or a murder of a foreign national. Mainly i have to admit in places like pattaya etc. But my impression is thai people dont like foreigners very much at all. Join thai visa .com ask questions there and read the news reports daily its not good reading.

Just this week a swiss guy was found dead in his home stabbed in the stomach strangle and tied to the stair bannisters. No theft by all accounts he had lived in that house 6 years this was in Chiang mai. Last week a young guy was found on the street dead naked he fell from his balcony 7 storeys up the police say it was suicide, but no suicide note, the girl he went into the room with can't be found biput it was suicide hmmmm a few week previous the was another body found fell off a balcony also a suicide so the police say. I guy was beaten up by tuk tuk drivers a whole family was beaten up and the old lady was knocked down then kicked in the face. A man married to a Thai girl was found hanging down the side of his burning house, another suicide police say. I could go on just too many foreigners being beaten or killed. Mainly I admit down south Pattaya and Bangkok mainly

No one is questioning whether or not these events happened, as they have been the subjects of news reports, but there are at least two sides to every story, and knowing that they died does not tell us anything except they died. How do we know that Thai killed those people? There are millions of visiting tourists as well as many foreigners of many nationalities who live here, so a relatively small number of deaths proves nothing without the reasons they died. About 80 people die in Thailand daily just in road "accidents", but hundreds of thousands, if not more, are on the roads daily. I've known a few foreigners that have been killed in Thailand and they were killed because they were arrogant enough to think that the Thai had to play by their rules and put up with them. I'm not whitewashing the Thai either. There are criminals in every country. When people travel to places where they do not know he rules, it is up to them to learn, and it is up to them to research potential dangers. My only objection to your post is that it does a disservice to the many millions of Thai who do not go around committing crimes, including those in the areas you cited, and you don't know in each case who did it or why. I recall about 40 years ago when about 7-10 million tourists per year visited Thailand, but now it is almost 30 million per year, and that means more bad things are bound to happen.

I would never suggest that all Thais are murderers of course not I am not totally stupid I had a Thai gf in UK and mixed with a lot of thais . but there is an unusual amount of farangs being beaten and murdered. The beatings were done by Thai they were arrested. The murders are unsolved as yet and the suicides well seems like an a whole bunch of Americans and British go all the way to Thailand to jump off their ba!cony and commit suicide. I have been told that Pattaya is dying on its feet now less people going there not sure if that's true or not. It has clouded my desire to live there I have to admit. The only place I would consider would be up north I think Chiang mai is still relatively safe but obviously not that safe. I will wait now see how it turns out. Thailand is not the only country in Asia that is good to live in.

When you say an "unusual" amount of farangs being beaten and murdered, that means that there must be a "usual" amount. IOW if we don't know the usual amount, how can any amount be called unusual? You could be right, but you are making a claim of fact without any valid data. For example, Pattaya itself has a population of over 100,000, and Cholburi Province has about 1.5 million, and neither number counts tourists. People who commit suicide are making a personal choice, and it is kind of hard to ask about their motives after they kill themselves. The point is that when someone commits suicide, why blame the host country for personal choices? More likely the reasons are found in the life history of the specific individuals concerned. Maybe their education taught them that they were special, and life taught them that "special" is something earned, not bestowed for merely being able to breathe. According to data I have seen from 2012, Thailand ranks 56h in the world in the suicide rate. WHO estimates that someone in the world commits suicide every 40 seconds of every day. Maybe people who end towards suicide read about people committing suicide here and it becomes attractive for people who have suicidal tendencies to fulfill them here. At any rate if someone commits suicide, that does not pose a danger to anyone else, and does not make any place more "dangerous". As for killings and beatings, unless we know the causes, insinuating that the people in the host country are at fault without proof is disingenuous. Isn't the real question "Was Thailand safer before the massive increase in the number of tourists?" How much have the tourists contributed to Thailand becoming more dangerous (if it is in fact more dangerous than in (pick any year)? How much have improved communications and the sensationalist media contributed to perceptions of any country, and are those perceptions generated by the media accurate?
Do all foreigners who want to live in Thailand have to live in areas with a high tourist density (which often can mean a higher crime rate)?
If you don't want to live in Thailand that of course is your choice, but I disagree with your portraying Thailand as a place rife with danger without talking about the millions of tourists and the two hundred thousand foreigners on long stay that never experience trouble.

These were not random acts, the people put themselves in positions where this kind of retribution was brought down upon them. I can be quite a contentious asshole and am getting to that age of being cantankerous, yet would have to go out of my way to get into the kind of trouble you write about. Keep your eyes open, behave like an ambassador from your country, and you will not have any problems.

As has been written time and time again, join ThaiVisa.com and post your questions there. Plenty of folks eager to help, and as it is jealously self-regulating, the information you get will be genuine.

I agree, Thais in general are very patient and kind. But if you go into a bar and get drunk and start wanting to fight, you are going to find yourself in a bad way because once they cross that line into violence, Thais seem to go all out and break out weapons and stuff. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, and with millions of people wandering around, you're going to see lots of weird things.
