A-O Visa US

Going to Thailand in Feburary. Debating on visitor or A-O visa. I'm retired and plan to travel around Asia for 1 year before settle down. Is it easier to apply for A-O there or in USA? How will I get police record if I apply while in Asia?

Hi, You can verify what I am going to say by visiting the forums at www.thaivisa.com.

First, as far as I know, you must submit the application in your home country, which means getting the police and medical certificates at home - they are only valid for 3 months each. If you don't want to return home after traveling in Asia for a year, then you will need to get the O-A before you depart the USA.

Other requirements can be found at http://www.thaiconsulatela.org/service_visa_detail.aspx?link_id=48

Since you can only extend the O-A in Thailand, here's what would probably work for you:
1. Apply for the O-A in the USA. Come to Thailand and go to Immigration and apply for a multiple re-entry visa , then you can travel, but may have to periodically return to Thailand according to the terms of the multiple re-entry visa. In any event, before the first year is over, you will have to apply for an extension of stay as a retiree, but you won't need a medical or police report, because you will already have submitted them to the Embassy or Consulate in the USA where you applied for the O-A.

When you apply for the extension to stay here as a retiree, it is called an extension of stay for the purposes of retirement in Thailand. There is no retirement visa per se.

Once you are in Thailand the first time after getting the O-A, if you stay 90 days continuously, you will have to report an address to Immigration using a TM47 form which you can get at Immigration or download from the Internet. If you leave Thailand before staying a full 90 days, the 90 day reporting period will start again the next time you enter Thailand.

It may depend on your nationality. For U.S. citizens see http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/service/thai-visas-for-americans.html. If that does not answer your questions, try the forums at www.thivisa.com
