Living cost currently

I am currently in Ukraine, and my dollar has tripled in value since arrival. I can live well on $300 a month. How does that compare to baht and living costs? It is getting cold now.

I highly recommend you ask your question on ThaiVisa.com

Do a search first, there are too many variables, such as your age, what type of visa you can obtain, etc.

Thank you, that is a very interesting site. I do not see yet where to ask a question, but it seems like I am getting an approximation. I am single male, 54, on govt SSDI so I do not need to work. I expect to stay put, so am not too worried about renewing Visa. I am illegal in Ukraine for four years now, no problem with police, they just tell me not to leave or I can not come back, without sizable 'private ticket'. I would like to just get married somehow.

You would probably find it very difficult to survive on that amount of money. The average or annual income is Thailand is about $5500/year or about $450/month. The minimum wage here is about $8 per day or about $240/month, but keep in mind that the Thai by and large live with their families and share expenses; many own their own homes, even if they live in small wooden buildings in many cases in the countryside.

You are a recipe for disaster in Thailand. There are many beautiful girls who will swear they love you forever, then take all your money, and leave you for the next willing victim. Understand they are not ALL like that but there are many, MANY men who were just like you are now, brokenhearted and no money, stranded in Thailand.

Thailand is very strict about minimum requirements for a non-immigrant O-A visa (often erroneously called a "retirement visa") and the subsequent 90-day extension of stay reporting. You say you are illegal in the Ukraine - if you do not completely comply with the Thai laws, you will find yourself kicked out (and possible jailed first) in a hurry. For most citizens, you must show either 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account for a minimum of 6 months, or a monthly income of about 65,000 baht. I have to get a notarized letter from my embassy every year stating this, then take it to immigration. Check what the requirements are for a Ukraine citizen. You say you are illegal, do you have a legitimate passport? Thailand will scrutinize it carefully. Do your homework before you make such a move. Thailand can be wonderful, but you MUST obey the visa laws. They are not going to compromise even a little. Best of luck to you!

P.S. - $300/month is not a lavish lifestyle, it's a bare minimum. You will not attract many girls that way.
