Thailand visa for U.S. retiree

I am a retired American who would like to move to Chiang Mai. I have been living in Argentina legally, as a tourist for many years. As a tourst, I must leave the country within every 90 day period.
I was told by the Thailand Consul General that because I don't have Argentina residency, she would not be able issue me a long term visa .It would be necessary that i visit a Thailand Consulate in the U.S. Is there an alternative to my going to the U.S.?
Do have any options? While money is not a problem, I'm not sure if an Elite Visa is a good idea.
I'd appreciate any suggestions and advice.

Hi outofba,
you can just come in to Thailand without visa for 1 month and do a retirement visa in Bangkok than move to anywhere you want. to get a retirement visa you will have to open Thai bank account and have 800.000 Baht in your account, if you do not have 800.000 visa agent can help you with it.
I am from Australia and living in Bangkok if you need help with your visa feel free to contact me.my skype id: Bagyiphyo
Cheers
