Want a break from your business??

Post New Topic

We are looking to make a move to Thailand. We want to live there for a time and see if it is the right long term fit for us.

If there is anyone on here who is looking to take a break from their current business in Thailand so that they may travel etc we would be interested in chatting.

4 adults, 2 kids
Adults have 4 separate professions: Franchise business experience (many successful business start ups), Marine engineer, Carpenter, and Sales.

We are ready to make the move in January.

Thanks!

I am going to stick my neck out here and risk a lot of flack. Firstly join Thai visa.com very informative.
OK I was going to move to Chiang mai Thailand but now changed my mind. There are a lot of robberies beatings and murders of foreigners there admitted mainly in the south pattaya etc. Nearly every day there is more and more news of foreigners being murdered or mysteriously falling from their hotel balcony, the police say its suicide. Just last week a young guy was found on the pavement naked and dead. Police say it was suicide, the girl who was seen with him is nowhere to be found, his family say no way would he kill himself. He is I think the 3rd or 4th I have heard of in the last few months all suicides !!!!!!!!!. This week a swiss guy was found in his house beaten stabbed in the stomach strangled and tied to the stair banisters in Chiang mai. There was a British family all beaten on the streets by a gang it was on CCTV and put on fb etc they even kicked the an old lady in the face after she had been beaten to the floor all on CCTV. The gang were caught and they apologised but the while family were hospitalised.
There seems to be an anti foreigner feeling in Thailand. Join Thai visa.com see for yourself join a forum on the place you want to live ask questions, but also read the news articles every day.
The expats there I find are a bit obnoxious to be honest very arrogant and very easy to blame everyone else for everything. One thing I noticed if you ask them about the deaths they play it down, I guess because they don't want to look like fools for living in a dangerous environment, but at the end of a news report of another death they are exclaiming how bad it is now in the land of smiles.
Please do a lot of research first. My mind has been changed completely. Pattaya seems to come up in the news very often.
Oh and the visa situation is a bit of a nightmare. You will have to leave the country every 90 days to renew your visa and I was told yiy can only use the place you renewed twice. So you have to find another place to go to. But that is what was told to me.
Noir sure about the laws of a foreigner running a business there but again do some thorough research first and don't trust anyone.

draks - No flack from me! I've lived in Thailand almost 11 years and would NEVER NEVER NEVER recommend a family move here unless they are being sponsored by their business and have tuition to an international school provided as part of the agreement. I've been teaching five years (grades Kindergarten through six) and the Thai educational system is ABYSMAL! Just two weeks ago we essentially lied and cheated to get all our students' grades up to passing. The international schools are very good but damned expensive - two children would cost an easy 1 million baht per year plus all the extra costs of field trips, music lessons, etc.

Thailand is a good place for single retired expat guys or couples, though it's starting to get expensive. I just paid $275 U.S. to have the lenses replaced in my glasses. Rent is still cheap, but food/medical/most other things are rising dramatically.

First, I am not clear what you are looking for and what you would expect of anyone who responds to your post. The way I read your post, you want a businessman to take a vacation and travel with you to discuss business opportunities. But for how long and why he would have to travel with you just to chat is not clear.

As for some of the posts about how bad things are here, while some who come to Thailand are unhappy, many others love this country. No one is forced to come here, and no one is forced to stay. There are alternatives to living in tourist areas where crime seems to be high.

I would not worry about anecdotal evidence and overgeneralizing about how terrible the county is. Violence is not a constantly occurring in every nook and cranny of the country, and some of the places mentioned where violence does occur may experience violence because of the actions of arrogant foreigners - there are two sides to every story.

Problems are caused by people, not countries. Be a respectful guest, avoid dangerous areas, learn about expected behavior, don't cause problems, don't interfere where you are not welcome, and you are unlikely to encounter trouble. The media magnifies issues and scare sells. In almost 40 years living here, I have never had a serious problem with any Thai, but I learned early how to assimilate as best I could.

As for the costs of living, expensive is in the eyes of the beholder. If you are willing to exchange money for a good or service, then the good or service is worth more than the money or you would forego the good/service and keep the money. If one does not have the money
to buy the good or service, then it is too expensive, so look for alternatives, and not staying is one of them.

If the international schools are able to charge what seems like a lot of money and remain in business, that is because there are enough people willing to pay what they are asking. If there were not, then the prices would be lowered or the schools would go out of business.

I frankly suspect you don't know what you are talking about and are paying too much attention to your "research" which seems to consist of the newspapers. Have you ever been to Thailand? If you go by the newspapers, America a deadly dangerous country full of earthquakes and tornadoes, with mass shootings every day, but if you've ever lived there, you'll know it's generally peaceful and safe. Same with Thailand. Also, Pattaya is in Thailand but it's not Thailand. If you go to the wild party places like Pattaya, it's crazy and a little dangerous -- that's true pretty much everywhere in the world actually.

I haven't read newspapers just what I read on Thai visa.com and the comments made by the farangs living there. Admitted most of what seems to be happening is in Bangkok and Pattaya. But still not good.. I also don't like the visa situation having to leave every 90 days a retirement visa 800,000 baht deposit that's a lot

I love Thailand and the culture but it has turned somewhat ugly now. I have a very good friend who lived in Pattaya for years, but two years ago left Pattaya to live with his girlfriends family in the provinces. He said Pattaya was getting less welcoming so he left.
