We left Th last month after 1 year. Hassles are everywhere. Once a friendly people, now everyone has a chip on their shoulder. Had a Thai man tell me I couldn't park my car in the street, that was for Thai people. He threatened to sick his dog on me. In PH where I can get 6 ninety day visas without leaving. For my $4000 USD retirement in TH, I received 120,000B. Here I get 180,000P AND prices are cheaper. Just stay out of Manila.
Cebu has a lot of westerners and all the comforts of home: golf, casino, good housing, great restos, excellent malls and now international flights.
We often ride the ferry to Bohol for great diving, beachy dinners and Oceanside rooms on the cheap. Just had three crowns replaced: $305 USD TOTAL. Nice job too.
Cebu has many international schools with Eng or US curriculum.
There is a drug problem in one run down section of town but not throughout the city. And be forward with the taxis before you get in, they want beer money. It's best if you negotiate than use the meter.
But that's the worst of it. Once you get around and talk to a few people, it's easy. Good expat groups for sport and recreation.

I live in Philippines, have done for a few years. But if I said to any expat in Thailand they tell me its so dangerous here, so I gave up saying anything. I was going to relocate to Thailand but the stupid visa situation plus all the foreigners that get beaten and murdered (mainly in Bangkok and Pattaya admitted) has put me off. There seems to me a bit of anti farang feelings. A friend of mine lived in Pattaya for many years and me and my brother would visit, my brother went every year, to be honest I was not overly keen on the place. My brother stopped going to thailand two years ago. He said it was not as friendly as before. My friend moved out of Pattaya and now lives in the provinces. I was going to Chiang mai which had a good reputation. But right now I think I will stay where I am. Its friendly, although the infrastructure is not as food as thailand .

Swegolf as you know the president is coming down hard on drug dealers and users. If there is one particular area where there is a problem I am sure it can be sorted fairly quickly. Not a good time to be an addict, dealer or a corrupt official at the moment. I believe there are big changes coming here there will be foreign investment, Japan has given 10 patrol boats. Things will change I am sure of it. Be interesting to watch anyway
