I am a retired expat and glad to help answer questions for others who would like to retire here.
I have a long history here and am familiar with most of the country, language and culture.

Hello! I am beginning to investigate some places to live when I retire, though it will not be for another 10 years - but it will give me a chance to visit a few places. My question is about healthcare - I will be widowed by that time and will have no one to look after me. Are there nursing homes or other means of caring for the expat elderly in Thailand ?

First a word of caution. Thailand, even 10 years from now, will still be very different from home. Some people cannot handle the differences, others, like myself, love the differences.
Since you are looking 10 years into the future, try a web search for - Thailand nursing homes for expats -- or use similar terms, like - thailand elderly retirement home -
Special homes for the elderly are a relatively new concept in Thailand. Traditionally elderly parents have been cared for by the family...at the family home, but there are some facilities available for long term care and more will be available in the future. After you do some more looking around, if you have any specific questions, let me know here or by private message. Money of course is a prime consideration... both as a requirement for coming to stay here and to meet the costs of living here. Insurance coverage if required, should be looked into in depth. Location of the home is another consideration. Thailand has a wide range of environments but few of them are cool and none are cool all the time. Expats tend to populate cities and beach areas, so you will find more English speakers in those areas. In addition if you find that you do not need a nursing home at the time you want to retire here, you can consider living in an apartment, buying a condo and hiring a nurse if need be, which will give you time to look around at the elderly care homes that might be suitable.

Would you consider emailing with an old fart who is considering retirement in Thailand? I'm currently living in China (9 years), but I've been to Thailand twice before; once to Hua Hin and Chiang Mai during a one month stay, then to Singburi two years later for a little more than two months. I'm hoping to find a place where I can enjoy the scenery and live in a rural and quiet environment in peace. Charles

Hi Beth - A friend just sent me a brochure for an assisted living place in Chiang Mai. It looked quite nice and was reasonably priced with good facilities. This is a relatively new field here and there seem to be more places opening. Contact me if you want more info.

Hi CW - glad to help. One issue you might face is that of being in a quiet location implies rural living which means you will need transportation in to shopping and such. You might consider a quiet location in a small city.

Hi I am a expat now living in Brazil. I want to visit Thailand for maybe about three weeks. Can you recommend a hotel that is safe but not very expensive, and a city to give me a feel of what it is about?
Thanks
Al

That is a very broad request. There are thousands of hotels and hundreds of locations in Thailand. I suggest you go to www.bookings.com and/or www.agoda.com wehere you can pick locations, hotels and prices.

Hi Al - - Without knowing your interests, it is very difficult to answer. There are beaches, mountains, cities large and small, expat centers, etc... It is a quite safe country and cleanliness is important - - in most places, you can find decent hotels for as little as $20 US... but in the tourist areas, season brings higher prices. Maybe do a bit of research and ask more specific questions and it will be easier to guide you along.

You don't provide enough information to answer your question. Thailand is an EXTREMELY diverse country and offers too many options to mention without narrowing your scope. Are you looking for a family friendly environment or an adult playground? Do you want to do the "touristy" stuff or the countryside? Bangkok, Chang Mai, Kanchanaburi, Pattaya . . . ?

Can you define your idea of "cheap?" and what city you're planning to be in and what kind of things you want to do? In Bangkok, decent hotels right downtown in the heart of Sukhumvit are $40 per night, cheap by most Western standards. I'll just throw out Maxim's and City Lodge as two options, just because I've stayed there. You can spend $200 per night if you want. You can spend $5/night. You can stay in the jungle, you can be by the beach. Need much more information. I would say pretty much all the hotels in Thailand are safe, unless you intentionally look for trouble.

In Bangkok are there good one bedroom apartments for $400 to $500 US DOLLARS in Bangkok in nice clean areas. How does the pension works for Americans is it different from others I heard you don't have to show the amount you have in the bank, Is healthcare good and cheap compare to the US. Thanks! At the end of the year I will be somewhere thinking Thailand. THANK YOU GREAT ONE!

Yes, if you go for a retirement visa, you will have to show either a statement of income or 800,000 baht in the bank that has been there for 3 months prior.
Healthcare is excellent but it is getting more and more expensive every year though it is still much cheaper than it would be in USA...
And depending upon your personal definitions of "good" and "clean area" - you should be able to find something moderate in your price range.
