Getting settled in: Credit Card, Bank account, Car Insurance, babysitter! ah!

Hi folks! I'm sure this is a super lame request (I've been reading some of the other content here and you guys seem like the experts!)

I've just moved to Bangkok with my husband and 3-year-old. We're going through that period of complete transition - trying to figure out banking, insurance, getting a car (and driving this crazy city!!), babysitter.

Is there one place with information on these, or any specific places? Credit Card info is especially helpful since today I went to the KTB bank (the blue one) and had a tough time communicating my needs.

Thanks! Hello everyone -

1. Credit cards: Visa, Master, etc., issued by banks in your home country are generally accepted around Thailand, so if you have one or more, there may be no need to get one in Thailand. I've only used credit cards issued abroad and have never applied to a local bank for one, and I've been living in Thailand going on 40 years. But if you need a locally issued credit card, I recommend you visit the forums at ThaiVisa.com for more information on this subject as well as getting a car, insurance, and baby sitters, as members here probably have more recent experience in these matters than I do.
For example this thread is about getting a local credit card.: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/529514-getting-a-credit-card-in-thailand/

Hi Eliz - and welcome. Not sure where you are from, but there are cultural differences that you will encounter. Please know that many in banks might respond in the polite Thai manner of saying "yes" to near anything. Be patient.

I use Kasikorn and find them excellent for wire transfers.

I also only use a CC from my home country. Car insurance should be straight forward, but always buy first class... baby sitter ask in your building...

If there is anything of importance in a bank, try and get a confirmation from a manager, though they can be incorrect at times too.

Kasikorn will not accept a wire from your bank unless it is $5000USD or above. Our monthly income is $4200, so we could not use our Kbank account. The amateurish teller made huge loud gestures alerting everyone in the bank that our transfer was below $5000. She was reinforced by other smug employees making sour faces. Nice.

Can you tell me at which branch this fiasco occurred? I inquired at Kasikorn Bank headquarters and was old there are no such limits.
Here is the reply I got:
According to your enquiry about international funds transfer, we would like to inform you that yes, our bank does not limit amount to make an international funds transfer to Kbank account. For inward remittances of at least USD 50,000 or the equivalent in other currencies, the recipient is required to submit the following documents:

Other relevant documents depending on the purpose of the funds transfer.

You can submit these documents at any KBank branch or Corporate & SME Service Center nationwide.

Or for foreign currencies less than USD20,000, or the equivalent in other currencies, the Bank shall reserve the right to credit the funds immediately without prior notice.

We use SWIFT code to make International Funds Transfer. Kbank’s SWIFT code is "KASITHBK". We would like to provide you further information that transferor might need to fill in additional details as followings:

1. The bank's name : KASIKORNBANK PCL.

In addition, to transfer to branches outside Bangkok and vicinity, there will be additional fees, which are leased line fee of 20 baht per transaction, and 10 baht for each 10,000 baht transferred (minimum 10 baht and maximum 750 baht).
