Hello we will be Coming to Thailand as US citizens for few mos from Panama sometime early Feb and plan to stay for at least 4-8 weeks.

How does the visa work? Is there any special thing we need to do besides the paperwork you normally fill out on the plane before you land? And does coming from Panama make a difference? I think we will be flying thru NY anyway..

And can we buy a one way ticket and decide when to go back or do we have to have a return ticket upon entrance to Thailand?

Thank you in advance for the info

This web site, http://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand/thailand-tourist-visa.php, gives you the requirements, but check with the nearest Thai consulate or Embassy to be sure. The only thing I could find for Panama was an honorary consul:
55-1769 Apartado Postal C
Ciudad de Panama Mr. Carlos A. De Janon F. Tel (507) 2705444, 2705491
http://www.guidetothailand.com/thailand-travel-information/honcon-americas.php
Documents required:

Passport or travel document with a validity not less than 6 months
Visa application form (filled out)
One(1) recent 4x6cm. photograph of the applicant
Round-trip air ticket or e-ticket (paid in full)
Proof of financial means (20,000 baht per person/40,000 baht per family) (Note: Cash and/or travelers checks.....the Thai baht is very volatile right now, and B40,000 is about $1250 today.

There is a Thai tourist visa application form at http://www.thaiembassy.org/abudhabi/contents/files/services-20120705-180020-288642.pdf

You do not need to apply for a visa. US citizens get 30 day on arrival. At or before 30 days, go to local immigration office and apply for an extension. It should be 28? Or so days.
Coming from Panama makes no difference.
You can make a PDF of a return ticket by requesting a quote from a travel agency. Print that out in case, but I've never been asked in Thailand, only in Philippines. But things can change.
