Hi all. I'm a 35 year old guy living in Medellin, Colombia. I more or less work from my laptop. I left the US last year to follow a dream of mine, seeing the world. So far so good. I wasn't planning on it, but I met a wonderful woman in Colombia whose dream is also to travel. I think we're going to continue the adventure together.
Thailand had always been high on my list for a few months or a year abroad. I did tons of research on it years ago, and tonight I'm re-starting the research. Couple quick questions:
What's the tourist visa situation in Thailand now? I read years ago that it was constantly changing as far as the ability to do visa runs. Is it still 6 months and then you have to do a visa run?
My girlfriend speaks Spanish, native, and English as a second language. Have you ever heard of people teaching Spanish as a second language in Thailand? Obviously there's an English teaching market, I'm just not sure about Spanish.

I've been to Bogota but not Med. Herard good things about Med. Wife and I spent last year in TH. Chang Mai is nice enough. Bangkok is messy. Hua Hin is good. Stay away from Krabi and Koh Tao. Many murders.
You might find a job teaching Spanish at a private school in Chang Mai, don't know. US curriculum. Faith Academy? Can't recall.
Visas: You will get 30 days on arrival then 28 day extension for 1800 B, about $50? then a visa run. It gets old quick as air travel is required and you will be hassled by immigration at Don Meung your 3rd time. It's crazy. BKK is usually no problem. Don Meung is run by local immigration hoodlums looking for extra cash.
It's best to apply for a year visa for you and your wife before you get here. Way, way better. You can do that by downloading the forms and sending it all off to the Thai embassy or go there in person. Avoid unscrupulous immigration officers. It's getting to be a problem in Hua Hin too.

Great swegolf. Awesome info. My new research project into moving to S.E. Asia has commenced.
Medellin is great, for anyone interested. Great weather year round-- almost always 80 degrees-- very low cost of living, some of the sweetest-- and frankly, gorgeous-- people in all the Americas. The two most popular neighborhoods in Medellin are Poblado and Laureles. Crime isn't too much of a worry in those two neighborhoods. Poblado is gringo central, Laureles is more of a Colombian upper scale neighborhood.
I've heard people who know both Medellin and Chang Mai say that Medellin is rougher, a little more dirty on the whole. But it is a city of over 2 million people, so it happens. The food is also not super great

Hi Jason, I have lived in Chiang Mai off and on since 1999. My wife is North Thai from Chiang Rai.
I have made long term visits to Buenos Aires and liked it a lot. Recently I read something about Cali, Columbia on this forum and got interested in checking it out. I guess most of us on this forum have Gypsy Feet.
I suggest you try for a one year Category O visa. You have to make a visa run every 90 days. I enjoy my visa runs. Getting out of Thailand once in a while is necessary for a lot of us.
I looked for Spanish but the only thing I found was a group thru the Pattaya Expats Group. Never saw anything in CM.
