" I am an American living in Malaysia who is considering an expatriate job offer in Amsterdam. I''m familar with the city, but have no idea what apartment rentals cost per month in a Centrum or Oud Zuid. It''s just my wife and I (no children) and we''re in our early forties. We need a 2-3 bed room flat in a nice (but not premium) neighborhood that is walking distance to the museums, restaurants, and attractions. We''ll have a car, so we''ll need ready access to a reserved parking place. We plan on staying in Amsterdam for 2 years. I recognize that ""housing in Amsterdam is expensive"", and there is a wide range of prices out there. However, what the approximate cost of renting something that meets the specifications outlined above? Is there a good website that posts prices and photos? (So far I''ve had no luck finding one). Any other sources I can search or telephone? "

" Hello Fred, I don''t know very much about Amsterdam just yet, because I''m still in Venezuela, but I''ve been searching a lot lately and maybe this will help you: http://www.euronet.nl/users/access/ http://www.rootsinholland.com/expat/realtor.htm I really hope you find what you are looking for Bye JCW "

" Fred, There are a few sites used by real estate agencies to advertise their rental properties, but the ones I have found so far have descriptions in dutch only. If you can translate the descriptions and have access to a map of Amsterdam (online), you may find these sites helpful. Anyway, they will at least give you an indication of the price range. http://www.kittyblank.nl http://www.rotsvast.nl http://www.funda.nl http://www.lfbvastgoed.nl tip: kamer = room huur/huren = rent These sites contain useful info provided by other expats. They also have a section on housing. http://www.expatica.com http://www.elynx.nl Good luck ! "

" Thanks for the reply. Apartment hunting seems to be more difficult in Amsterdam than in most international cities. Do you happen to have any idea what I could rent for NLG 4,000 per month in Centrum or Oud Zuid? Regards, Fred "

" Hi Fred, In reply to both this and your most recent email: There are two main problems with fiding accomodation in Amsterdam - paericularly in the Centrum - first is price (very expensive though Oud Zuid is considerably cheaper becuase it is further out) and second is that demand is so high, apartments go VERY quickly. I live here already, am looking to move and am finding it tough to find somewhere for these reasons. If you definitely need a 2-3 bedroom flat then I suggest you don''t head for the Centrum - it will cost you an arm and a leg! Plus you will be very lucky to find somewhere with a parking permit in the Centrum - most apartments do not come with them (and those that do load the price accordingly) and to get a parking permit can be difficult - some areas here have waiting lists of several years for parking permits. In fact I would suggest to you that you should consider *not* having a car if at all possible - I was a caroholic but was forced to turn down my company car here becuase of the parking problems - and to be honest I don''t miss it at all. Public transport is excellent here and very cheap. Anyway, just a thought....... For NLG 4,000 per month in Centrum, as a rough guide, you would get a one or two bedroom furnished flat, should be clean and tidy (nice decoration etc) for that price, may be near or overlooking a canal, but if so don''t expect parking. For the same price in Oud Zuid you would get a two-bedroomed place, quieter location (cos remember canals = tourists) and maybe parking. Little tip for you as well - whatevre you feel you can afford for rent, tell the agents an amount 500 - 1000 guilders less than this. They will push you REALLY hard to spend over your limit, so play them at their own game! Hope this helps, happy hunting. Helen Regards, Fred "

" Helen, Thanks for the great tips. I will be viewing my first apartments today and will focus on Oud Zuid. I am giving myself a month to find a flat that will be ready to move into on July 1. I''ll need a car since my job is outside the city, so I will definitely stay away from Centrum. With Appreciation, Fred "
