" Hi, I am an American living in Leiden and I have to warn you, it''s a tough place to find housing. Not only is Holland a very crowded country, but Leiden is a rather small University town, so there are a lot of students to compete with. Many flats or houses are rented by room, which is appealing to students but not couples. Having said that, I live with my boyfriend in a fabulous flat, and had a decent flat before that. You must register with housing agents once all your living papers are approved here. You will pay a small fee, but then you''ll have access to all their listings. It''s really up to being in the right place at the right time! Besides the housing agents, you can find a makelaar which is pretty much a real estate agent (SELLS property) but they sometimes rent--these rents tend to be higher. You will have to pay an agents fee of about 1-2 months rent. I would say be willing to pay fl 2,000 a month. You can get inclusive or exclusive prices meaning inclusive or exclusive utility bills. Finally, the Merenvijk (sp?) is a suburb-like part of Leiden which tends to suit families more. Tends to have more available, although it is a bit boring. Finally, I had a horrible landlord who I recommend you stay away from: Aad Berg. Don''t rent a place from him! Email me if you''d like more advice! And good luck! It just takes time and a bit of luck, but it IS possible. Mehera "
