" My husband is trying to find a job in the Netherlands in Human Resource Management, any suggestions on where to look? Also, if you have to have a job to get a work permit and can''t get a work permit without a job, how are you suppossed to bet a job. "

" Hi there , My husband and I lived in Amsterdam for two years and are now back in the USA ( 8 months) after a year in London. We went through all that hub bub about permits etc. In Holland. It can be a real pain but not as hard as it sounds. If your willing to jump through a few hoops and shake your head allot. I am forwarding your post to my husband since he dealt with the permit issues most often ( he was the one with the work permit) Perhaps he has some advice. In our siuation though, I was not eligible for a work permit but my husband was. That is because his company at the time, transfered him to the Netherlands and thus obtained the work visa for him as a COMPANY. Trying to get a work visa on the spot as an INDIVIDUAL is nearly impossible unless you are a student. I tried to get around it but it never worked. So I was unemployed for the two years we were there. The government is very strict about hiring foreigners. Under the table work is possible if you are williing to work for very little. The exchange rate and the way the work week is scheduled just did not seem worth it to me. You can usualy only get 3-5 hours of work a day (more than that and you get taxed up the whazoo!.) and unless you speak Dutch, you may have a hard time finding that. If you can get your husband hired BEFORE you go to Holland then his hiring CO. can get him the visa no problem but once your there, it will be harder unless he has a particularly SPECIFIC and I mean highly SPECIFIC skill that someone else in Holland or the EU does not have. Only then do they hand over a work visa. As for A permit to reside, that is obtainablle once you have the work permit I think ( I will ask my husband to clarify) But you have to register with the foreigners police or POLITIE. YOu get a hoto ID and a stamp on your passport .The Visa and ID I recieved was specific and said that my residency was only good so long as my husband was responsible for me ( antiquated or what) and I was married to him. SO in actuality I , Personally, never was really there legally on MY OWN merit but just as a sidekick, unable to work or attend school. ( you can only transfer to a school in Holland you can''t just go sign up as a foreigner) I hope this helps even if it is a bit discouraing. As for work places to find a job I would recommend www.overseasjobs.com They seem to have allot of resources and links. Like I said I will have my husband drop you a note about permit specifics and I wish you luck. Email me if you want to know more about living in Holland. I am free to chat. Regards, Samantha "

" Shell, Shell, and did I mention Shell? My husband was recruited off of monster.com into a Finnish company in the Netherlands; MANY of our friends here work for Shell. Trane, Texaco, any oil companies, most IT firms, KPMG - all are big entities here with international staff. Generally, the chicken vs egg things is solved when you have a company that desires to employ you here. They sponsor you for and apply for the work permit on your behalf. Best wishes! "
