I am a british expat living in the Netherlands. My girlfriend moved here from the US at the end of November 2005 and was offered a job with my employer. However the company has taken so long to make her workpermit application (lodged with the lawyers and CWI last week) that here 3 month stay is almost up. My employer estim ate that the work permit may take another 3 to 3 weeks. I am unable to sponsor her residence permit as my divorce in the UK is not yet finalised. Can anyone please give me advice whether the 3 month stay can be extended an/or if there is any way I can sponsor her for a residence permit which allows working?

Hi, Check you girlfriends status - as American citizens can usually stay in the Netherlands up to 6 months without a VISA. English citizens used to have only 3 months permission to stay. If this is no longer the case -one alternative is to take a trip outside the EU for a weekend and re- enter Holland with passport stamped on entry. Then you have a further few months time. (Take a week (end) holiday to Tunisia or Eilat for instance.). Best wished and Good Luck!
