Hi! No, we don't live there anymore. We lived there for three years until about November 2010, so it's been a while since we were there! But, very happy to tell you of our experience there. Briefly, we lived in the outskirts of Almelo in Nijrees - there is not much there except for houses and car dealerships, although it is good for access to Hengelo/Enschede. If I had the choice again, I would not live there, I would be either in the centre of Almelo or at least much closer to the centre, or maybe even Hengelo or Enschede because it's a bit more up-beat there. Almelo is quite quiet. having said that, it does have it's good points - the forest near Nijrees is lovely, especially in the winter with all the snow on the trees. It's beautiful for walking. They have an annual bicycle race through the centre of town and that's a great event with everyone lining the streets and partying! I can't really recommend any of the cafes in particular, but in Enschede there is "Bagels and Beans" which was my favourite - it does a great café verkeerd ("cafe wrong"!!). How long are you going to be there for? Have you arrived already and have accommodation? There is an expat group in that area that meet up every now and again but I don't have the email address any longer. When I get he next group email I will send you the organiser's email address. But I do suggest you also meet some of the locals and get involved in local events. We joined the Mini Car Club in the area and still keep in contact with a few people from that group today. We found most people in Almelo very friendly and helpful and our neighbours were lovely. Don't be worried if people seem rude - it's just their way!! The Dutch are generally very direct. Let me know if you'd like to chat more. I'd be happy to help if I can :-) Best, Jenny
