I need to find out what the best/least expensive way is to ship my belongings from Canada to the Netherlands. I'm hoping to be able to send books, artwork, clothing and some small pieces of furniture, if it is not too outrageously priced. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For sure! I just got back a couple of shipping quotes (from Mordano International & International Movers Ltd) and the least expensive was still about $1800. I'm hoping to figure out a better way. I have been told that if you can find someone who is using a shipping crate, you can each use half the space and share the cost. I'm in BC, so I'm not sure if that's an option or not.

Pay for extra luggage on your flight to the Netherlands. You can take quite a bit this way. It is the cheapest and by far the fastest. It arrives there when you do! Shipping can take months and it's very expensive.
As far as bringing furniture, I have found it quite easy to find furniture here for very cheap.

Thanks so much for the info!
Bringing extra stuff on the plane as cargo was what I had narrowed it down to, too, as the cheapest way (though still quite expensive at $10 per extra Kg of baggage).
Have a great day!

So how did you move your things. I'm looking to do the same from the US. This is our last move. Not taking it all but it all seems to add up.

Hiya...I'm in the whole process of shipping too, but I have already chosen a shipper and just waiting for some paperwork before sending things. I'm not saying Mordano is bad or anything...just know that the price they quoted you ~most likely~ doesn't include other fees, which could be door-to-door service, extra taxes, storage, etc. Plus, if I remember correctly, they don't have local brokers throughout the provinces and they don't have a permanent shipping partner on the NL side. I went with Tippet-Richardson (more money, but less hassle). They have been around for over 80 years and my rep was very professional and honest. Make sure you ask a lot of questions when you're getting these quotes.
Here are some points I had jotted down that might help you come up with some questions:
how does stuff get from [your home] to a boat? from the boat to [where you're moving]
hidden costs?
packing fragile stuff
cheaper to pack myself?
insurance whether they pack or I do
how long does it take?
customs and taxes
size of container
sharing containers
weight or volume?
documentation for here and there
short term storage
Hope that helps! Cheers!

Hey. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a cost effective way to ship my stuff to the Netherlands. I only ended up shipping 2 boxes as freight via the Transat airplane I was flying on. It cost me about $600 and then, much to my disbelief, I was charged another 75 Euros at the shipping warehouse, before they would let me pick up the boxes. (and the warehouse address was not listed correctly and I had to go on a wild goose chase to track it down at the Schiphol airport). Needless to say, most of my stuff is still in Canada. Sorry I don't have any other info for you. -- Good luck with your move.
