Hi everybody, I just moved here from the US and I don't know anybody. My fiance has a job at the University of Twente so I often find myself sitting around the house, bored. If you are in a similar situation, maybe we can get together for coffee and commiserate so we don't have to be so bored anymore! I look forward to meeting you :-)

Cool! I have a friend here who's from Canada also. She sort of has the opposite experience though--she has a job here and her fiance moved with her so he's the "house wife"! I am a gal (Molly, nice to meet you) and I live in Hengelo, so about as far away from Volendam as you can get! Good luck with everything...

Hi Molly,
I will be moving to Enschede at the end of this month in search of work. I'm British and I will be staying with my boyfriend for a month to see if I can look for work. I would like to meet with you for tea or coffee, I think I will be in too much male company when I stay there. It will be interesting to meet you. Thanks.

Ha! Yeah I could use a little girl time myself these days :-) I'm actually home (US) right now visiting my family but I'll be back next week. I was able to get together with a girlfriend from high school last night and I had forgotten how much I miss girl-talk!
I live in Hengelo which isn't far from Enschede, but I don't have a car so I can't go further than I can get on a bike. There's a coffee shop in Hengelo I like called Kaldi's, but if you want to meet in Enschede that would be fine as long as it's not too early so I have time to ride there.
I'll be back in Holland on Tuesday... what is the date that you're moving here? And what's your name if you don't mind me asking? :-) Looking forward to meeting you!
~ Molly

My son and his wife are living in Enschede, and are convinced they are the only Americans there! I believe Hengelo is the town next to Enschede. They are orig from Philadelphia and have been there 2 years. Would you like to make contact?

Hi Molly (and everyone),
There haven't been any posts on this thread for a while, just wondering if anyone is still out there. Enschede seems like the last place you would find expats! I've just arrived from New Zealand and wondered if anyone would like to meet up for a chat, share experiences.
Lina :)

I am also from Canada. I've been here one year, but still don't know many people as I live in the country...near Roermond. I'd also love to meet up with people or even chat online. Cheers, Renée

Hello Renee.
Although, according to the map, you do not live near me, ( I live in Volendam) I would still like to stay connected with other Canadians via email as well if possible. My email address is: [email protected]. ~cheers~

Hi Cherbear,
I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a tough time. I hope you have some supportive family and friends back home to talk to, or we can be your online support network :)
I am missing home lots as well. sometimes I wonder if it would be any easier living in one of the west coast cities...

Hi everyone, I didn't realize this topic was still going! Tinap, I'm very sorry to tell you that you're about a year and a half too late. I left Hengelo in September of 2011. We were supposed to stay for 2 years, but I was very lonely, had horrible seasonal depression, missed my family and friends, couldn't get a job I liked, etc etc (I'm sure you know how it is). I'm happy to say I'm now in Boston, married, pregnant, and going to grad school!
Anyway, I wish you lots of luck in Hengelo... see if you can find some kid-friendly events/activities in the area-- I was told it's the best way to meet other moms (someone actually suggested that I get pregnant just to make friends... I won't say I didn't consider it! haha). Veel succes!
