I am a US citizen and have had a Dutch residence permit (verblijfsverguning) for a year due to the fact that my domestic partner works in the Netherlands. All of my personal income was in the US and I will pay US taxes on it. I have not received an "invitation to pay taxes" here in the Netherlands. Should I file anyway? Also, if I have to file I may have to request an extension, as my US taxes will not be finished until May. What should I do?

Practically it would be better not to ask or file anything till May. After receiving the information you can file voluntarily the Dutch tax return(if they do not ask earlier to file) Cheers Jasse

Dear George,
As a partner you can claim a partner rebate if you file a Dutch tax return (max EUR 1.174). For your partner it can be also beneficial to file a tax return since in 90% of the cases when migrating during the year one can expect a tax refund!
Please note that In case you spouse has a 30%-ruling a limited amount of Box 3 income has to be reported.
Please contact me if you need additional information - info@ttmtax.nl.

I find it bizarre that you have re-posted my inquiry of some four years ago. FYI, I wish I had not gotten the Dutch residence, as it has cost me a lot in taxes. I have reverted to abiding by the Schengen Treat Countries tourist rules of spending not more than 90 days in Europe out of each 180.
