moving to holland with dutch partner via the 'eu-route'

Does anyone have experience with the EU or Belgian-route?

My Dutch boyfriend and myself (Canadian) are currently living in Ireland together. We first lived in Holland together for a year (me on a 1-year working holiday visa) and now we have lived in Ireland together for almost a year, most likely to be another year, before wanting to move back to Holland.

I have heard a little about the EU-route - apparently if you live together in another EU country for 6+ months, you able to re-enter the Netherlands as a resident. However, whatever I find on the internet is very confusing and I would like to speak with someone who has more knowledge of this!

Thanks for any tips or help.
