I've excepted a job and will be working at piarco airport. The company I will be working for have estate agent to provide accommodation but I'm interested in knowing the best/safest area to move to in advance so I can have a look at what's available. I have been told maraval and west shore are good. Any other suggestions out there?

Maraval and West shore are nice areas, but the rent for decent homes in those areas are expensive. Depending on the time of day it could be a 20 min drive to the airport or 2 hours sitting in traffic.

As far as safe neighborhoods, this place is no different than the rest of the world. There is areas you don't want to go. A little bit of common sense goes a long way.

Where a outs is west shore? I can only find west shore medical centre on google maps so I'm guessing it's around that area near west moorings?

Hi
You don't say if you are single or married? I know some guys live in the Hilton because you get a good day rate long term, it's safe with a good gym and pool. If you are going with your family then Glencoe, Westmoorings or even St Annes in gated secure compounds. There is a gated community out near the airport on the golf course near Trincity Mall if you don't want to fight the traffic to work. I would start off in a hotel and get your bearings and take your time to choose something that that suits your needs. We had a great villa and pool with an amazing view but wish we had stayed in a secure compound because after a couple of dodgy episodes we were getting very jumpy at night. I'm in Dubai now and still getting used to not looking over my shoulder. I miss the beauty in TT and the lovely people. Just a shame its being destroyed by the criminal element. That's just the government lol.......

I'm married and my wife and son are moving with me. My company are putting me up in a hotel whilst we find a house. The housing company they use have a duty of care to place them in the safest area but until I get there I and speak to them I won't know where those areas are hence the question about best areas so I can have a look and see what is available.

I don't know how old your son is, but if he is of school age that will be a factor too. Westmoorings is very popular with expats and very safe. The school bus stops there too. If you have a relocation package bring all your stuff with you! Furniture is overpriced due to high import duties. The choice and quality in TT is limited. We took all our furniture over and sold it when we left for more than we had paid for it back home.
I advise you wife to contact the American Womens group in TT too because they will be able to offer great advice and the best place to live. Housing companies or Estate Agents in TT will show you what they want to show you, usually owned by someone related to them. That's what we found. Good luck

Hi, we are expats living here and are in town (Port of Spain) so if that is what you are looking for then the best neighborhoods are Westmoorings, Fairways, Moka (a bit further out) and if you have a wife and kids then you should be a part of our Facebook page for expat playgroups with kids. Message me once you are ready.

Does anyone know what Maraval is like? I've been told it's the best areas if we want a house? Are there shops, bars etc I the area and are they walking distance?

Traffic in general is pretty bad during rush hour but I've heard that Maraval can get a bit worse than other areas. However, it is a very nice area. Other nice areas as St. Anns, Cascade. Or the west: Victoria Gardens, Westmoorings. All these neighborhoods are very nice, safe and it's also where most expats live. There's an international school in Westmoorings and a nice mall, both 10-15 min walk. I was told that I couldn't find a house for less than US$3000 but I found one for $1400, so be clear about your budget when you contact a realtor.
