Hi. I recently moved here with my fiance and there are some things you should be careful about, but so far we have not had any unpleasant situations. In this case it is important that you choose a safe neighborhood. In case you havent found a place yet, these are some of the safest and nicest areas: Westmoorings, St Ann's, Cascade, Maraval, Victoria Gardens, Goodwood. And about dogs, we aare also bringing our dogs but it's pretty complicated, if you havent started this procedure let me know so I can give you some more info. Also, you should know that, unfortunately, it will be a bit hard to find a furnished house that will accept your pets. Tenants do not like pets in general, we had a hard time finding a house.

Thank you for your reply this is very helpful. I have heard westmoorings is very good also I have heard there are some good schools there. It is important that I am close to a good school and a safe gated community but worried about how the dogs fit into this. I haven't started any procedure as yet so any advise would be much appreciated . We are moving from near London and I have a spaniel and a retriever.

In Westmoorings you have the American International School. And there are also Canadian and British schools, but I dont know exactly where. Most of my colleagues' kids attend the American school. About the dogs, I was told that basically no gated community will accept pets, maybe you'll be luckier but that was the response I got from 3 different realtors. There are a couple of apt buildings/ gated community in Westmoorings but its basically an opened neighborhood, however, it is very safe. We live there and I really like the neighborhood. Our dogs were coming from Costa Rica and the US so Im pretty sure we had more requirements than the UK, if you give me your email I can send you the application form/ guidelines. Once you submitt your application it only takes 3-4 days to get the permit, but on our permits we were asked for more tests for the permit to be valid, and also the permit was given for only 3 months so you have to make sure you dont apply too soon but have enough time in case they ask for extra tests.

Where will you be moving from? We have a Facebook group for expats in Trinidad with kids and we do playdates and stuff. Once you are heading out here we will get you on it. In the meantime feel free to ask me any questions. I am in the States right now so not checking email every day but will get back to you when i can. Crime is mostly in the poor areas like every city which you won't ever go to.

I am not moving without my 2 dogs just worried about walking them early in the morning and early morning runs as I am a long distance runner . I need a safe place to live if I can't live in gated community

Early in the morning and between 6-7 pm Westmoorings is full of people walking, walking their dogs, running or hanging out at the park. Its safe and everyone goes out before the day gets too hot (before 7-8 am) or after the sun sets (starting at ~6pm). I run at night, usually at 7pm but have done it at 7:30-8pm and its very safe, and as I said, I dont live in a gated area, people just run around the neighborhood. Also, we walk our dogs right after dinner (~9pm) and one last short walk around 11pm and its still safe. There are security cars circling the neighborhood all day.

Is it possible to share the facebook group mentioned in the thread by msturge? My wife, 8 yr old boy and myself are in the process of agreeing to re-locate from Ireland - and I'm keen to see the conversations.
I'm currently being terrified by the ridiculously high rental prices :) and apparent lack of kid friendly space. I don't want to live in a gated community - but obviously want to ensure my family are safe and well whilst I'm worked to the bone!

The group is private but once you move here you can send me all of your info (mother's full name, child's name and age, what area you live in and her email address and I will forward to the girl who adds people to the group.
I will try to answer some of your questions though in the meantime if you want to PM me with them?
