While I was there late last year, a private non-profit agency had lost much of its gov't funding for recycling of certain items. There are efforts to recycle, but are very spotty. Trash disposal and general environmental cleanliness need massive efforts on the island.

Most areas have glass and plastic recycling receptacles. I am in an expat mom group here and we are always posting about this issue of finding more. The Scouts Association (which is right off the savannah in St. Ann's) was accepting also cardboard and milk cartons as well as metal/tins, and they closed down due to mistreatment (not rinsing, mixing them up, leaving them in bags for someone else to sort, etc) but now I hear they are back open this week...whew!
