" Hello, I wonder how you got my address, but that''s not important. I have just retired from the Detroit Public Schools system and am off to Istanbul in 2 weeks to teach at a private school there. What can you tell me about Istanbul? It sounds as if you like it there. What do you do? Write? How wonderful! I would love to hear from you again and to have a chance to pick your brain a little bit. " Hi Noreen, Pick away. By the way, I just responded to your message on the Turkey Expat Exchange board, and you must have ticked off the thing at the bottom saying to send you copies of the messages posted. Anyway, I didn''t even know your name until I got this message. I am happy to field questions re: Turkey, but haven''t lived in Istanbul. Have been in Ankara for three years, and really do like it here. Fire away! Michelyne "

" Yes, that was it! It was months ago that I was on that site and you are my first response and I had forgotten about it.Where are you from? What do you do? How did you end up in Turkey? I was there 4 years ago for a couple of months which planted the seed. It was different enough to be a bit exoctic, but I loved it. I will be teaching at the Uskudar American Academy outside of Istanbul and am looking forward to it. Many of my questions have been addressed by people at the school, but there are a few things I felt silly asking about. I am single, although I am also 50, but wonder what the opportunities for meeting men and dating are. What are the men like? Do you run across many people from other countries there? The people seemed very friendly, but I wonder if it easy to meet people and make new friends. What about food? I am afraid to say I hate lamb, and wonder if I will be able to find beef anywhere. What about Itlaian restaurants? I was surprised to hear there was a Japanese one. Have you traveled throughout the country? Any recommendations about places to go or anything else? Thanks for the message and I will look forward to hearing more about your adventures there. Noreen "

" hi there, i have not yet ""lived"" in turkey, but i am living with a turkish man and have been there many times. we are having a house built outside of istanbul and will be living there in a few years. i just wanted to vouch for the fact that there are some very, very nice men in turkey. tourists/foreigners sometimes give them a bad wrap, because the ones they meet are the older men on the streets near tourist sites who make comments, etc. but i know MANY respectful, honest, loving men. generally, these are the men who were raised in middle to upper class homes, and often they went to english or french schools. i have no doubt that you can meet a wonderful man there. just find the educated crowd! sa for the food, i am vegetarian and feel like i''m in paradise there! wonderful food! you can find beek, but their fish is to die for. you''ll learn of the ""best"" places to go thru co-workers, i''m sure. like i said, i''ll be living there (maybe teaching) in two years (or less), i''ll keep this email accnt, so please feel free to keep in touch so we can meet some time!! good luck in your adventure. turkish people are the most hospitable i''ve ever met!! ciao, jill jeffries santa barbara "

" Dear Jill, Many thanks for your repsonse. I feel silly asking these things, but then they are a part of life. I have retired, sold my house, packed up my stuff, will leave on the 13th, and will beging a teaching job. I am looking forward to the adventure, but get these little waves of nervousness now and then. Your comments were reassuring. How did you meet your Turkish man? Where are you building your house? Will you be living there permanently? It sounds great. I would love to keep in touch. Thanks again. Noreen "

Jill,
I saw a few of your posts and was wondering if you ever made it Turkey? We moved to Istanbul a few months ago, my husband is Turkish but never lived in Turkey himself. Like you I visted quite a bit before making the big step. Where were you building? We rented something quickly but were pressed for time so when the lease is up in the fall will be looking to buy something. Let me know if you have hot real estate tips! Take care.
Regards, Nicole

Dear Nicole,
Having seen your message regarding real estate in Istanbul I would like to take this opportunity to recommend a company who have assisted my wife and I (and also some friends of ours) in locating both homes and an offices in Istanbul.
As you probably know - the real esate market is a minefield and the company we recommend (Metropol International Property Services), are the most professional and trustworthy relocation company we have come across during our 4 years living here. They also offer a free 'home assist' card which we have benefitted from .........
Their telephone numbers are: (212) 2878092. The lady who owns the company is Ms. Canel Baysal and her mobile is : 0533 6550155, (and they also have a British expat Partner who knows the ins-and-outs of living here).
I hope you find what you are looking for and wish you luck for the future.
Kind regards.
