" hi jennifer (and all), i am very excited to learn that people like you are living in istanbul. my boyfriend is turkish and we are planning to move there next Fall. I have a MFA in creative writing (poetry) and would LOVE to work with writers. your comments about working in this field give me hope. If i stay unmarried, will I have a problem working long term(renewing a work visa)? That was a concern...Also, it seemed that teaching may be a more ""profitable"" job in istanbul, where wages are not very high. Do find this to be true? I would love your input. By the way, do you have any contact with the Turkish PEN org. there? (The writers community group) I was told that it is in istanbul, but have not been able to reach anyone there. I hope to translate poems written by contemporary turkish women. I will stay in contact and would love to meet you once I make it over there! *We were concerned about finding an artistic community we could relate to!* Ciao jill Jeffries California/New York "

" Hi Jillian, first, about working--it is a pain in the ass to have to renew your working and residency permit all the time, but it can be done and if you find a decent job, your employer should help with the process (but not always). If you get married, you have to apply for Turkish citizenship within one month of getting married or you will never be approved (as of current processes). If you have Turkish citizenship you never have to renew anything. I don''t know your citizenship, but I can tell you it is not a problem for US citizens to have dual citizenship here. On the other hand, if you have Turkish citizenship, if you have a legal problem, your Turkish citizenship counts before your US one does. Something to consider. But we do have a very good support network to keep us abreast of foreign spouses''s rights (Yabaci Esler Dernegi--Foreign Spouses Association). As for working. Teaching is about the lowest wage job you can find with little or no benefits. I suggest trying anything else because not only are the wages lower, but teaching English or in English will inhibit your Turkish learning. It doesn''t even matter what kind of job you get--the experiences are going to fuel your ideas for writing... I do not know of the PEN org, but I can certainly help you find it. Most of my group activities are with my publication or with the AMerican Women''s Group because I''m trying to help the newbies acclimate and get as much out if living here as they can. It takes support to learn how to live here and love it! Hope to keep in touch! Jennifer jgokmen@excite.com "

" We are visiting Istanbul Dec. 23 and would appreciate any insights you might have for a short-term visitor. Also, might enjoy meeting for a cup of tea and discussion. I am Cliff; my wife is Mid. "
