" Hello! I am planning to come to Istanbul at the latest in September 2001, and need to find an apartment - preferably but not necessarily on the European side and just for me. Does anyone have any advice about how to look, where to look, how much to pay, what to expect in terms of leases & legalities or general conditions, etc.? I may be limited to teaching at first so a penthouse is hardly in order. What can I expect to pay if the place is somewhere near the metro (ideal) or along the Bosphorus but no further than Bebek or Arnavütköy? Thanks! "

" It''s been about four years since I''ve lived there but a pretty nice 2/3 bedroom apartment near the main road in Bebek can cost around $1,000. Usually apartments are priced in USD or DM. If you can get one in Turkish Lira you would be much better off but this is really hard to do, especially if you are a foreigner. There are a bunch of real estate brokers ""Emlakci''s"" that can help you find a place. If you had the time you can also just walk around the neighborhood looking for ""For Rent or Kiralik"". Depending on your budget constraints, try to get an apartment that has a building with continuous hot water rather than a water heater (I just think it is a pain to wait for the water to heat) and more importantly a depot for storing water. In Bebek, and on the European side in general, they often block the water supply due to shortages. With the earthquake and economy you should be able to do much better on rent than when I was there. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information, rental agencies etc. I would pick up a copy of ""the guide"" once in Istanbul for basic information on the city and contact the American Women''s association. They can offer you all sorts of advice and tell you where to find Hershey''s, pringles, and pop-tarts when you get desperate! "
