" Help, I am interested in purchasing property in Turkey, but I am having a hard time finding out how to do it. Does the Turkish government allow foreign citizens to purchase property? "

" Chad - unfortunately I have no answers for your question. About one year ago, I asked the same questions on several forums - possibly including this one - and got very few responses and none with any detailed information. I have checked several published sources but none have specifics about Turkey. I am not in a particular hurry with this endeavor so will continue to try to get answers to many of the questions one should have about property ownership as a foreign national. If you would like to contact me at my email address (rjgum@yahoo.com) I would be happy to share anything I learn and visaversa. Regards. "

" Your best bet is to visit the local estate agents (emlakchi in Turkish) in the place you want to buy. They may not always know English, in fact it would be extremely rare to find one who knows English. They usually don''t have pictures of the places they are selling but would be willing to give you a ride to the place. I would advise you to ask for help from a Turkish friend if you have any, not knowing the language is a seriuos barrier like in any other country. For listings you can check out the newspapers www.hurriyet.com and www.milliyet.com (these are in Turkish) As far as I know, foreign nationals are allowed to buy property but there may be restrictions. Contacting the embassy of the country you come from may be an idea to find out more. good luck and best regards, "

" Hello Chad, your best bet is to speak to a lawyer on the details of your question. There are certain areas where a foreigner can or cannot buy land and the list of how you can do it is quite long. Let me know if you need a contact number. Regards,Yasemin "

" I lived in Izmir for more than two years and considered buying property near Cesme Alti. Still do. Yes, foreigners can and do purchase property without a copurchaser. There is information on the internet about it, and most importantly, the government position on it. The government can remove foreigners from Turkish soil when it is considered in the best interests of the nation, including confiscating their property. Probably not a clause that would be used since it joined NATO, but it is there. I found it as an english legal reference on the internet. My spouse and I do plan on returning to Turkiye when we retire, somewhere near Izmir and friends. Michael Poulsbo, WA "

" Michael - thanks for your response to my quest. I would be interested in knowing the internet sites to which you refer; I have been frustrated in my search efforts in that regard. Please feel free to email info directly to me. With the current political and economic situation, I am not making specific plans at the moment, but if things normalize somewhat, I, too, am considering at least parttime retirement residence in Turkey. I would be interested in discussing this privately by email if that is acceptable with you. Thanks again - rjgum@yahoo.com "

You would probably do much better to rent/lease a place.
