My husband and I are in our early 60's and intend moving to turkey in a year or two.

Any advice as to how we find a property in the Akbuk area.

Also most importantly what are the pitfalls of such a move.

Any advice would be appreciated

Linda

Greetings and Hello,
I am in a different situation than you. I am married to a Turk 21 years and we recently purchased a second home - that I call our Turkish Time Share. We are established in USA, but have so many family members there, that we wanted a place to hang our hats rather than sleeping around in everyone's living salons. My mother in law will also stay in our home on occasion. It really will be a stopping point for the USA families!

My first suggestion is, like many others, to sell or store your belongings and buy new in Turkiye. Save the troubles of import fees and transporting things there. take what you must in your luggage. Turkiye has everything the rest of the world has. Appliances need to work on their electric and are pricey as are the newer beds. BUT many household items are cheaper and you can make many new acquaintances by buying local to where you will be moving.
Do realize, being foreign they may think you are wealthy and try to charge you more. Be tough and do not be afraid to start to walk away from an offer if you feel you are being overcharged...They may come running after you with a lower price.

Do you speak the language?

In what part of Turkiye is Akbuk located?

Hannah, the happy Turkish Traveler

one other suggestion: I bought an English Cookbook for the convection stove we bought in Turkiye....My stove in the USA is just a regular one!
I am sure I can think of many things to share. Another is that most Turkish homes are alike in how they are set up....Zillions of homes, but all resemble each other inside. Such as the curtains - most use the long gorgeously patterned white panels that cover most of the wall. There are so so many beautiful patterns to choose from! And you must have the under curtain for after the sun goes down for privacy!

there are a couple of books for sale about moving and working in Turkey. Although the working part doesn't apply to me, the info is relatively up to date (2008 and 2006 editions) in regards to routine things. One difference is in the visitor visas and the time allowed in country and the 180 days before a return visit. i still don't understand it all... but those books are pretty true to real for city life in Turkey

re-read your post and see you are really looking for property....I can tell you the real estate offices are a laugh. We were shopping in winter and it was very cold and often there were "no homes to see" because they did not want to go outside!
We watched the internet listings daily and found our home that way. direct with the seller. saved the commission fees, too. All the paperwork was done officially and the new deed recorded in the deed books. this was done at the bank. We also bought the required sigorta (insurance) on our property.

Be sure you CAN buy property in Turkey...are you or your hubby a citizen of Turkiye? That would be a major pitfall.... Those books I recommended do go over these issues.

I'm not sure if you're still looking, but if you are my cousin-in-law owns a real estate agency (Milan Estate Agents) in Didim.
He previously lived in Belgium and has a lot of experience working with retired expats, helping them find the right residence and sort through all the paperwork in a clear and legal fashion (he's also gone back to study law).
If you already found a property, but have any questions, I'm sure he'd be happy to help too. You can contact him at info@milanestateagents.com or onurarik@hotmail.com
I'm also running a joint blog with tips and Turkey culture, https://retireturkey.wordpress.com/ . Perhaps you'll find something useful; perhaps you would even like to contribute some impressions or photos.
