Greetings, and Happy New Year to all. I’m new to the group and have enjoyed the candid views. I’ve been to Kharkiv two times and wish to move there the end of this year. I’ve done research but looking for any tips on obtaining a long-term Visa. My apologies if there has been a thread dealing with this subject. It is my understanding the only long-term visa I can get is either employer sponsored, student or marriage. At this point none of those are not an option for me. Does anyone know if an NGO or church will can sponsor me? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Also could I go the Ukraine on the 90 day visa, then go to a border country rather the fly back to the USA then back to Ukraine? Thanks – Mike (Houston)

As for the 90 day limit, yes, you can just pop down to Moldova or over to Warsaw. Or wherever...so many options in Europe.

Hey guys, need some help. I need to know the best way I can get my money here to ukraine without being raked over the coals in fees. I have a bank of america account. My bank has an agreement with iblisibank to exchange money at a reduced rate. But when I went to atm at this bank, it wanted to only give me 20.84 grivna per dollar plus the 3% that Bank of America charges me. With western union, I can send myself $1000 plus $120 fee and get it in dollars. To me, seems like a better deal through western union.

When I worked for the military, I got an account with Navy Federal Credit Union. They don't charge foreign transaction fees on ATM withdrawls and I can withdraw up to $600 a day. That worked for me, but I was not living there full time, so maybe someone else has a better way of doing it.

That doesn't seem right Mr Extreme. To high.. I'll share what I do..I use my Wells Fargo Debt card and can take up to $1000 per day. Fee's are none from the bank in Ukraine ( Rafeissen, Pro Credit, and I think Uni Credit also, but there are many that do not charge ) and then the fee's from Wells which are 5 dollars each withdrawl as stated on there website. Then I carry a "no foreign transaction fee credit card for purchases I don't want to pay cash for, which I try and do all the time so as to increase my mileage balance ! Then, if I want to buy a car or something over there, I simply wire transfer from the usa to my bank there..So I again pay Well's $40 to do that. From what you write you need to establish a bank account there ! 80 percent of the people that work at Pro Credit are sent to school in Germany to learn English and our way of banking. As far as an address there to establish an account I believe isn't necessary. They don't mail statements or anything like that. You can do it all over the internet so it's possible to give them any address. BUT, talk to a banker because my friend, the rules change as far as that is concerned. I'll be in Odessa mid Feb and would be more than happy to introduce you to my beautiful banker Ann..Look at their Website and you will see it has English option and locations throughout Ukraine and that part of the world. .Hope that helps,, see ya !!

Mike- I lived in the Houston area for 30 years-- Pasadena, Tx-- worked as an International Longshoreman. Right now in Schertz, tx-- between San Antonio, and New Braunfels. I own a home in Kherson, Ukraine-- A NICE home-- Your question about visa- yes, just cross the border in ANY other country, and get a stamp in your passport. I personally went to Moldova. Now, I have a permanent Resident certificate, I'm fine. Getting my Permanent Residence here was a pain in the butt-- The woman in her high place really wanted some tips ( under the table ) money-- I was perfectly legal under the Ukrainian Constitution to be allowed my residence. SO--- I hired a lawyer for about 3000. grivnas, shazam, all was over in a heart beat! You will find that a little BRIBE money talks-- so much corruption, however that is the way of life in Ukraine. Where there is a will, there is a way! good luck Mike, Do pursue your dreams-- Wonderful people in Ukraine-- will be MUCH better when the midget putin takes his paid killers home! Bill

Keep it simple...Set up an account with Western Union using your US bank account. Send yourself the money. You will receive it in 4 business days in dollars. The fee is only $12 per $1000. I don't know if you have a Premium Bank in Kharkov, but they usually convert at a rate 20-30 grivna/$100 more than anyone else on the street.

Thanks kindly for the encouragement and information. Regarding the 90 day restriction, it is my understanding basically I can only live in Ukraine a total of 6 months of the year. I will need to live somewhere else for 6 months of the year. The Belgorod Russia is very close to Kharkiv and seems the cost of living is comparable, it is a nice city and I could continue to practice the Russian language. I’ve done some research regarding a multi-entry Russian visa. Does anyone have any experience with commuting to and from Ukraine and Russia? One other thing I wonder about is if I cross the Russian border via bus, train or bicycle can I get my passport stamped? - Mike

Ok Western union will send you your money ach debit from your bank account in US for a flat fee.of $12.00 no matter how much money you send. They will only send it in USD. But you have to wait 3-5 days for it which is ok with me. If you want it right away, it's $48.00. Its the holidays and the banks won't be open til Monday. My wife tells me that you have to call the bank a day ahead and tell them you want dollars, that way they have it on hand. If you send yourself $1000 USD, then you get $1000USD. she says the local black market currency convertor will exchange it at $25.40:1 USD right now as long as it's nice crisp bills with no tears, folds or dog ears.

Hi. I have always heard about firms getting a work permit for foreigners and then hiring them so they could obtain a temporary residency. Finally I found such one. Dealing through them you don't need to set up your own company. However I still don't understand how they manage to do this. No doubt it is all about connections.

Let me see if I can help you, Ken...12/1000=.012. Multiply by 100 to get a percentage. That equals 1.2%. I can see that you reached your lofty millionaire status because you had people smarter than you making your financial decisions for you.

thanks much for the info extremevx. I remember Bill from Texas/Kherson uses a service he found out about @ the u.s. embassy. It seems similiar to a debit card. I was informed the banks in Ukraine are charging 7% to transfer money, and I did not know if Bill wears a fat money belt traveling. As long as one is NOT paid in hryvna, and has at least $1K a mo. coming in and NOT paying rent, one can get by. I take it, if you send a larger amt. via the Western Union to "yourself in the states" say $10 grand for ex., the Western Union office has "money scanners" and things will go thru o.k. Will that be in order? thanks Mike

thanks for SO MUCH info KK. Longshoreman ALWAYS had it made, (big bucks) i never knew about them until the strike with Regan in office, threatening Russia as usual with embargoes. I have not been on this site much, and have only seen what has come into my e-mailbox. Hence my post about (Bill may wear a big money belt traveling).Ukraine NEEDS to GET ALL of the Ukraine/hired u.s. puppets OUT. Remember Biden has his son "ON THE TAKE there!" HE is not there to be a good fellow ! That's is the obvious tipoff the u.s. is running things. They are ALL CORRUPT. Get in a gov. from Sweden or Swiss.! I have now seen via the other posts, one can move money in and out of Ukraine.

The question on transfer of money from US banks to a Ukraine Bank is a interesting topic. As all things in Ukraine, one can wiggle in and out of a situation many different ways!!)) I just spent Dec 16-26 2015 in Odessa. We were visiting family and looking at property around Odessa area. I stopped by 2 Banks and asked the very same question about transferring money from a US Bank to a Ukraine Bank to pay for a property purchase. I was told the old 3% fee for a Bank-to-Bank transfer of money recently went to 7%. That's a Hell of a fee if one is paying $70-140K for a property purchase. SO DEFINITELY RESEARCH ALL OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO AVOID FEES !! Advice !!, don't think like an American, think like you are from Ukraine....just wiggle, wiggle, wiggle ))))) you will find the loop hole)

That's a bunch of bs! Even after leaving after 90, you will not be allowed back for another year! JUST DO NOT GO OUT. Police know I am here, and I spend, not earn. Good for Ukraine.

I have all my money wired here in dollars, only. exchange rate has tripled since coming. You can convert what you need, when you need it. It is in violation of the bankster laws to convert dollars to hgr at market rates, so either pay outlandish bank fees, or be careful.

Yes-- Overstaying one's time in Ukraine will not get you deported. If staying in Ukraine permanently , dont worry. The problem is when one leaves the country. You will be called out of the group boarding the airplane, sit on a bench, and told to wait-- officials will approach you with a price to pay-- usually not too bad. You will get a stamp in passport and all is well. Board the plane. Bill

Thanks smmoravec. How long would I need to stay out of Ukraine before returning? By the book, is one allowed only total 180 days per year in Ukraine in this case? - MikeB

Yes, that is correct. 180 days total, but they never really check. I watch the time I stay carefully not because of getting into trouble with Ukraine but the IRS. I claim foreign exemption and if I am ever audited (which I am sure will happen eventually), I do not want any expensive hiccups.

I've just had a visa card with no foreign fees, and take my US dollars out in a Privat bank, no charge. Now, THAT is simple! Visa debit.

Good luck, but there is a legal way..Sell the flat in Ukraine, open a huge interest bearing savings account, and attach a credit card to it.. I have two and it works fine anywhere in the world..

NO- you would not miss the flight! Can you believe that my Ukrainian wife, traveling on an American passport, did hold up one plane for about 15 minutes. This was in Odessa. After the payoff, all was fine! Bill (William Hall)
