Can someone explain this whole tourist season in Odessa to me. I was looking online and found site after site with daily rent apartments going for as high as $400 ---a day!
Is there some kind of scam going on or are there folks out there actually dumb enough to pay $200 to $400 a night for a place to stay in Odessa.

Odessa's economy depends heavily on the tourist industry. In the summer season, thousands of tourists come here from mostly Russia, and other European countries. It is all about supply and demand. Limited supply of housing + large demand for housing = high prices for apartments.
During the winter, I rent my apartment for only $250 per month (large supply + little demand = low rates). During the summer while I am gone, the apartment owner will rent it out for $50/night. So, for a short stay during the summer in Odessa, you will expect to pay the premium rates. No scam involved, just Economics 101.
FYI, during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, entrepreneurial homeowners went to live with relatives and then rented their homes for thousands per day to the tourists.

Russo, how far away from Pothemkin Stairs is your apartment? I was wondering where you lived in Odessa when I was standing on the top step of Pothemkin Stairs with my wife my last visit. Are you the one from Layton Utah?

I see your point. Some years ago they had some kind of sports event here in the Dallas area and I recall reading that folks rented out their house and even apartments for outrageously high sums.
I'm on the fence about whether it's right or wrong. Guess I'll just call it the way of the world.

Seems like he's never going to live there so maybe it doesn't matter where it is. It's an investment that appears to have excellent upside potential. Hats off to him.

I live about 100 yds from the Potemkin Stairs. Yes, I lived in the Layton, Kaysville, Farmington area for about 20 years. You should have let me know when you were in town!

Yes Russo, I should have done better about visiting you and even KK, I think I drove right past KK's home in Fontanka 1, while we were looking at homes and property in Fontanka 2,3,&4.we even stopped at the mall next to Fontanka. We were on a tight time table when we were their. It was no vacation. Visiting sick family and looking at property and homes for 3 days. Not enough days to go around.

Mornin KK, You are showing your "LACK OF KNOWLEDGE " about the u.s. Anyone knows where Port Charlotte or Sanibel Island are, these are not backwater villages. You are not going to get the rents you post in Ukraine unless the property is in Kiev. You're exposing yourself ! Beaufort or St. Simons Island are other favorable places down south. take care bro.

yeah you gotta laugh KK...reminds me of a scene where a couple are having a heated argument...the exasperated lady yells..."'aw Michael, you're so frustrating because whenever we have discussions you only hear what you want to hear"....Michael counters with.."thank you!, I like to keep my hair short in the summer."
KK would you know of a fair,straight- shooting car rental company in Ukraine?? cheers

Whomever is expecting rent like the property is in Nice, France is obviously looking for suckers. There was an old country song years ago entitled: "I got some oceanfront property in Arizona." Maybe you remember it. I don't listen to country , but that title I remember. cheers.

Well, there is a guy in Odesa by the airport I have used in the past. You can rent for about 4-5 hundred a month all inclusive.. His name is the same as everyone else's ( I usually go with Igor or Vadim ) but I mostly call him car rent man. He speaks English better than I so no issue there. And he's pretty dam legit !! He will work with you for say 2+ months on the price..098-734-5777. Tell him his ol pal from Odesa " Ken " and he will probably screw ya more ,, hahahahaha !! That was a joke !! Seriously though, he's ok...Good luck !!

Yeah, and once you hit the beach, just turn around. It's easy to pick out the American style to his house. :)

KK, you built your house on an empty lot? How much did the city and utilities gouge ya for hook-ups and inspections?
A few years back I looked into how much it would cost to get new electric and sewer hook-up here in North Dallas (vacant lot, no previous connections to water/sewer etc)... I nearly fell on my back side from sticker shock) The lot was within my budget at the time and I could have built a good sized house on it... until I added the costs for all the inspections and utility hook-ups; that scuttled the whole deal.

All costs and all documents totaled roughly 5 grand with both houses I did.. No inspections, the electric company gets the hot to your box and done ! Gas co. gets the gas to the inside of the house the way they want it and done ! Water same. to your land and done do what you want from there...Hence the 5 grand...Pretty nice.. Plans no, get out some scratch paper and draw what you want..Permits, one guy in the region, 100 bucks and he's good..Great country !! hahaha
