Since its April 15, I will ask this question. I have always wondered how many x-pats file their tax returns. Does one use a tax man still living in the USA. File your self on line. Is their a local retiree that does this on the side for a little income. Just wondering ...

I have been filing mine online for the last 15 years since they started e-file. If you do not have complicated taxes, seems pointless to have someone do it for you.

I have a CPA from the states do mine NA. Mine happen to be a little more complicated than the average bear so that's 1/2 the reason why.. Other reasons are that there is no way we could keep up with the changes every year in the tax codes. Lastly, I learned from a very wise woman that whatever it costs you for a CPA, a good one will get you back double what you pay him...That wise woman was my Mom !! From 0 - 5 million in 30 years, not bad...

Does the US Embassy have someone to assist with questions and forms and such?

What are they going to do to you if you don't file taxes over there? Unless you have a return coming, I would think"nothing." Remember a guy names Rush Limbaugh, the question came up about O'Bama care penalty if one does NOT sign up. The ruling was, "the gov. can not do anything!" The only thing they can do is keep anything from your return. They depend on people here to be "afraid", and walk the line. My wife was complaining because the taxman did NOT have the balls to slide my pension deduction as I have posted. IT would GO THRU in Ukraine. You guys ae lucky to be there! They can not put 30 million people in jail, it is not Stalin times. People here are afraid!

I have read many articles in financial web sites like the Wall Street Journal that the U S Gov. has been very hard on x-pats not paying their taxes. Also, certain banks will not even allow you to have a account with them if they know you are living over seas. I get the impression the U S gov wants our American money kept in the USA at all costs. Unless you are Super Rich than you can hide it in off shore accounts. They seem to only be hard on the middle class !!

If I am not mistaken, one can get their passport siezed at customs for oweing back taxes. I have even read articles where the U S Gov is garnishing Social Security checks for unpaid College student loan debt.

I did read a few days ago that they may confiscate ones passport if one owes taxes. THAT EVERYONE, is why the newsletter said we should have a 2nd passport! Also, I read, they only want one to buy certain gold or silver coins for one's IRA acct. American or Canadian. The American Eagles look o.k., but the Chinese Panda has the mirror finish. It is NOT on the preffered list, (wonder why). Most of the reason to buy a coin or two, is to take it out and look @ it once in a while, like baseball cards. Panda is the best. I still have a few Topps from 1958 or so, Pete Rose rookie, Kofax, and maybe Maris also. Maybe I can get $20. take care guys .

Just a quick note on the subject NA.. Yes, there are story's and yes there have been instances where they have done everything that you have said, but but but.. The odd's are very low that the gov comes after us poor people. Yes they want your money, and yes they will get all they can, but they do offer tax write off's.. It's another reason I invest here and there in Ukraine.. Just about all my expenses are write offs included travel and leisure.. Rental biz is a wonderful write off game the fed's offer us my friend and it's very hard for them to track your "intake" so reporting is kind of lets say " at your discression " .. I've had house's and rentals in other places in the world and all be dammed I cant seem to ever make any money !! hahahaha.. I think you get it..So in summary, play the tax game with them, there's about 100 million of us they have to track. They do pretty good and are getting better but the corrupt ( thinking of some good cuss words about now, hahaha ) guys at the top will never take away all of the write off's because they own property's also !! And the lord surely knows those pricks need write off's !!
