Tourist Safety Kharkiv

Hello,

Thanks for your time in reading this. Am American male, 42, wanting to travel to Kiev, then take train to Kharkiv for 7 days to visit a female friend who is Ukraine citizen living near Kharkiv.

She says its very unsafe for Americans to be in Kharkiv right now, and Ukraine in general.

I frankly don't believe that, but know it's not safe to travel to war zone, obviously.

Is it generally safe for American or foreigner to travel to Kiev and take train to Kharkiv for 7 days ?

Spasibo,
Jeff in Chicago

P.S. Why would you doubt her opinion and suggestion not to go there? That might be more a consideration my good man.

Ok. I was talking to my wife about this issue and being she is a 36 year old ukraine woman she is very knowledgeable about these issues.
First of all, ukraine is safe for americans every where but the donbass, mariople and lugansk are. Th is area really isn't safe for any civilian. My wife says there are several reasons this girl in kharkiv would be saying it's unsafe. One..may 9th is coming up and this is the end of ww2 and there may be some demonstration in the city center kharkiv and this is a predominantly pro russian city. But my wife says she doesn't see why it still wouldn't be safe for americans. 2...the woman has never met you and may have reservations about you coming to her home town where everyone knows her. She may not want everyone to know she has an American man until she is sure of you. My wife was the same way. We met in kiev and spent a week together before going to nikolaev. She had to know I wasn't freddie krugar first before taking me to her home town where everyone knows her. If I were you I would ask her if she would be more comfortable meeting in kiev the first time. You have to understand that you are a foreign man to her and her family. Ukrainians are very close knit family and what family and friends think is very important to them. You also wear very different clothes than Ukrainian men do. You are going to stick out like a sore thumb. Ukrainian women don't like this negative attention your wardrobe will bring when she is with you. You see, there are many worries this woman will initially have for you coming directly to her home town and neighborhood. Buy she will not tell you this. Ukrainian woman expects the man to think of everything. 3...this one you probably don't want to hear and my wife wanted to know the age of the girl in order to say if she thought this 3rd issue was plausible. She could be a scammer and really be married or have a man and this could be the reason she is looking to make excuses for you not to come. Or my wife says she could have several other men she talks to and one is already coming during this time. My wife says if the woman is in your 20's this could very well be the case. I know you probably don't want to hear this I know, but you have to be smart.
If it were me, I would suggest to her that you meet in kiev and spend time there. Because like my wife says, she may not want to bring you so close to her family, friends and hometown until she is comfortable with you first. And believe me, you want your woman to feel comfortable or there will be no magic at all. Hope this helps.

P.s... I did that very thing Jeff... One time... Two times... Didn't listen to any warnings from Ukrainian-Russian acquaintances... Was there last May 9th... Happy I did... I like Kharkov people and culture better than Kiev. As soon as my home sells I will move there. Go check it out Jeff. Take the high speed train so you can see the beautiful country and have time to think....think. First class. Try the ???? restaurant and eat all the traditional Ukraine foods. Go to the Cathedrals. The museums. Just don't do nutin' stupid bud. Know there are fewer English speakers in the east. You need to be as self sufficient as possible. You will be seen as an ATM with legs. Hang on to your money, heart and that thing that gets us guys in trouble. One other thing... most folks in the east are White. Just sayn'...

Hi guys,

thanks a lot, really appreciate any help and insight, being a 'virgin' traveler to Ukraine. My friend is 30 yrs old, living in small town of Svatove, a little ways outside of Kharkiv. She doesn't know anyone in Kharkiv, but this seems like the safer place to meet being a large city.

Am average looking white guy whose ancestors came from Germany and Czech Republic, if that makes any difference as a traveler to Ukraine ;)

Planning to travel there next week, May 10. US Embassy in Kiev says there shouldn't be any problems going to Kiev and Kharkiv. Being from Chicago, it's easy to realize there are 'problem areas' in any large city in the world. There are neighborhoods in Chicago that might resemble the war zone in Ukraine )

I've been in Ukraine for over five years now, and I believe it is safer for me, a WASP male, Christian, law-abiding citizen, than in USSA now. The only danger I have is 'friends' trying to milk my bank account here. Honesty is an unusual concept here. Formerly, I would say honesty is very American, but after Chucky Swindle, and all the voter fraud by both parties, something has definitely changed world-wide.

Thanks again 'guys'. The intention is to establish compatibility and a relationship with the woman in Ukraine, as most foreign men. And ultimate goal is submitting Fiance Visa to bring her to US. A visit or 2 with her first is necessary, and she isn't able to obtain a US tourist Visa due to her unstable job.

'Sir2you', in what part of Ukraine do you live, if you don't mind ?

Yes, but nearly impossible for a single young girl to get a visa. Been there, done that.

My wife before we were married I tried to get her a tourist visa. Paid out big money for a professional to help her and walk her through the process as well as coach on what to say and not say at interview. My wife owns her own bussiness, has a mother, brother and son in ukraine but was denied because she didn't have a husband and no real ties that would make her want to go back....go figure. Doesn't matter now. She my wife and can immigrate as my spouse.

Well done un-earthing potential from such an obscure location!
I would only add, after being derailed a couple of times myself, a few things you mentioned regarding the lady's resistance to your travel, reminded me of a few dead-ends I endured. If she's not just afflicted with the small town "chicken little" syndrome, which would explain her narrow world view, then she could be a rare gem....in any case, long way to go without a plan B.(imo)

Hi

I'm English, married to a Ukrainian woman and we've lived in Kharkov for 2 years.

Kharkov is very safe !

You have to use common sense when travelling around, but that applies going to any country. So best leave your Rolex watch at home when you come, and avoid the town centre around 1am. Apart from that Kharkov is a really nice city.

The ongoing tension is over 400km away in the Donbass region!

My guess is if you don't speak any Russian, your biggest problems are going to be just getting here from Kiev. The majority of people here over 25 probably don't speak English and all the writing is of course in the Cyrillic language. So it would be best if your girlfriend met you at Kiev airport to escort you on the train. For example, if you take the express from Kiev it only takes 5 hours, but this depends on connection times, if you elect to take the overnight, just don't leave your valuables in the compartment when you go to the toilet, again it's basic common sense. With the overnight train, you will inevitably be sharing the compartment with three others - (take the top bunk for sure!).

No, maybe your girlfriend is trying to discourage you for some other reason???

Seriously, Ukrainians are generally speaking very friendly people. I've been in a lot more hostile places than the Ukraine. And Kharkov is an excellent city.

Nuff said ??

Be sure you video cam with her first before you fly, even if she must borrow a computer with a camera. Make sure she is not a 300 lb man named Igor working at a scam dating agency !! Just saying, this really happens in Ukraine. A friend of mine worked in Nikoleav for 3 months at a dating agency, pretending to be a lady, chating with American men looking at hot pictures of Ukraine ladies....but never video cam with them. His name was Igor also, but he does about 185 lb, )))

p.s. good words Tex posted, may I add DON'T wear a Yankee cap, most of the U.S. is anti yankee, we're all Cubs fans nowadays! " they may shoot you".
2 yrs ago my wife told me to get my Packers flag out of the window of our car coming over the border in Ill. And yes Ukraine should definately be 20 times safer than the south side of Chicago.

I second everything Extremevx has said. When I was serious about finding a wife, I would go to Kiev and invite women from other cities to meet me there. They never refused. Also, if the woman you are meeting is younger than 37, there is a 99% chance that you are being scammed. The only exception is if you are movie-star handsome and very rich, then someone as young as 32 might be sincerely interested.

Russophile,

Thanks. What's the reasoning 99% of Ukraine women younger than 37 are only seeking rich handsome men? Are there that many rich handsome Ukraine men to choose from, and the women there can be choosy of foreign men ?

Frankly, doesn't sound plausible or realistic. If it was true, this would mean all Ukraine women younger than 37 are quite shallow and superficial.

Despite the propaganda disseminated by the corrupt marriage agencies in Ukraine that are only interested in how much money they can make from you, the hard and fast truth about Ukrainian women is that none of them want to marry a man more than 5 years older. If you are rich and good-looking, then she might go 10 years, but you would always be wondering what the real attraction to you is. I know you don't believe it, but while you are in Ukraine, I want you to pay attention to the couples you see on the street. Ninety-nine percent of them will be within that 5 year gap. If you see an older man with a young woman, they are either 1) A hooker with her John, 2) An idiot getting scammed by a marriage agency, or a guy walking with his daughter or granddaughter. If you need further proof, set up an account on VK.com, which is the Russian speaking equivalent to Facebook. Here you can meet women that are not associated with a marriage agency. See the age range of women that are really interested in you.

I don't agree, there are some cases of scammers, but not all women wear the the same shoes, you cant judge all by a few, you just have to be aware and use commonsense, and remember don't chase models, be realistic

do keep in mind that many people nowadays look younger than they are chronologically so some 45 yr old guys maybe mistaken for say 32 and can attract women around that age. Realistically though, if you're not attracting 25-35 in your own country you won't be attracting them in Ukraine..
