So I was chatting with a good friend of mine that lives outside Odessa in a small fishing village (Vilkovo). We rarely discuss politics and I guess I know why now. She started going on the other day about how much better the economy was when they were friendly with Russia and how the war is senseless, men just dying for nothing.
She is an intelligent woman and her viewpoint on this really surprised me. I had always assumed she, and anyone in the Odessa area, would be anti-Russian and Odessa is next on Putin annexation list.
Am I wrong about this? I feel like this is mostly a product of Russian propaganda. Any other explanation? After the Holodomor is 1932 when Stalin starved to death 7 million Ukrainians, you;d think they would have gotten a clue. But after the F-Up at Chernobyl....that was what ignited the fall of the Soviet Union. How can they forge that? Nothing has changed in the way Russia treats Ukraine since them...their little lap dogs.
Am I missing something here?

From what I gather which is very limited, odessa is mostly pro russian. There is much talk about putin annexing the southern half of ukraine from mariople, kherson through nikolaev to odessa. My wife and her family talk about moving to lviv if this happens. That part of ukraine will always be pro ukraine.

That won't happen if Trump gets elected. He will start WWIII if Putin doesn't pull out of Ukraine. One reason I like him...kick Putin in the balls like the bully deserves.

Need to hurry and bring ukraine into NATO. Hope trump can make it happen. Russian doesn't have to economy to go head to head with nato. It will bleed their recourses more than the sanctions already are.

Yeah...I don't see Ukraine entering NATO before joining the EU. And I don't see that happening now that Britain has pulled out. That was a big blow to the EU's stability.

You write like your here in Ukraine Scott ? Are ya ? About the pull out of the Brits from the E.U. Good for them ! Looking at the demographics of the people who voted remain they are the same type of people as our Hillary voters.. E.G. Big city's overwhelmingly were remain ( London especially ) and then the small towns voted leave as a whole..So as in the usa, the takers wanted to stay with the EU because they were the one's writing the rules allowing all of those losers to get the freebies, allow the immigration and on and on, same as Hillary, and the Obambam admin..So good !! The majority said stop the dam freebies and immigration and I hope like hell there are enough u.s. voters that can read between the lines and elect ol bump !! I'm voting for the ass hole that's for sure !! It's the women I am afraid that will put crooked over the top though. They don't like Trump so they wont vote for him.. Frkkn braniacs !! I explained to my X last time I was there that who cares if you like him or not, who do you think will get the job done, him or crooked ? She sat there and just stared at me for like 45 minutes with her pretty blond hair and blue eyes, hahahaha.. Well maybe 5 minutes... So guys, about Odesa being pro Russian..Russian is the language that is taught around here at least, not Ukrainian..And its the older folk that are pro Russian. The younger, say under 25 are definitely not but its that 26-50 age that is a pretty tough call..The smart ones or shall I say better informed ones pretty much are pro E.U. and the one's who don't understand much about politics and goverments are the one's that need to be convinced..So ya it is a pretty close split..I don't however think Putin will annex any more. BUT, if he wanted to, I certainly don't think a crooked admin will do a dam thing nor will Nato..Bump, different story.. And man, I hate when the current admin says "we stand with the people of France in solidarity " .. ( Speaking about bammy and crooked staing that after the truck killed 80 or more..My opinion, who gives a rat ass if you stand in solidarity, do something you poooosy's !! Shut off the internet in all of Syria, arrest anyone who even hints of terrorism on facebook ! And ya, bump em out !! And if you just happen to know one and you don't turn him in, your getting arrested too !! The cop's cant stop this craziness alone, the people can though !! The innocent muslims can and if you want to call me a profiling racist, your going to jail too !! I'm tired of the merciless killings and our X admin standing in frkkn solidarity with their head up there butt sending frkkn drones around !!

There are a lot of things I do not like about Trump. But...one thing I like is that he can't keep his mouth shut. He says what he thinks. Most of the time it's abrasive, but I prefer that to lying, conniving politicians whose hidden agendas don't surface until after the fact.
I am in Tennessee now and all I see are Hillary ads. It sickens me. She is claiming to have taken a stance against Putin. Really? Why is he still in Ukraine and gouging Europe on gas and oil? She claims to have gotten healthcare for millions of uninsured children...don't even get me started on that! Obama did that. She failed at it when her husband was in office.
Another thing I like about Trump is that is knows business...the successful side and the failure side. We need a president that can deal with Wall Street and get our economy back on the rise.
One thing I enjoyed about Ukraine was not a lot of immigrants...not like here in the U.S. The immigrants that are there are respectful of the Ukrainian culture. That has turned sour in the U.S. My brother-in-law is from Cuba and he is so damn proud to be an American. He is so sick of the U.S.'s lack of immigration enforcement. He went through hell (terally) to come to the .S. and become a PRODUCTIVE member of society. I don't see that with a lot of the illegals that come here. Sure they work hard, but they are also mooching off our government and sucking us dry. I don't mind them coming to work...I get that. I lived in Guatemala for two years. I understand the desperation and yearning for a good life. But do it legally and be respectful on my culture.

I think you will find that Russian sentiment (pro or con) is generation-related in Ukraine. Young people born after 1991 are very anti-Russian. Those that remember life under Soviet Communism say, "Well, it wasn't so bad".
Odessa is a tourist town and much of their economy depends on tourists from Russia. They may not agree with Russian politics but they figure that a Russian's money is just as good as anyone else's.

I have talked to several people about Ukraine joining the EU,they were for it thinking they would have more of everything since all in the EU are doing so good,my advance was forget the IMF,the International Bankers Scams !! it pissed them off,now all one has to do is look at France, Greece,Spain and now the Brits to what has and is going on behind the Banker Scam Artist, they control everything and your money with Committee's and your country is under contract to deliver whatever they say,how they say, when they say.Its all falling apart right before everyones eye's. I told them they would be better with Russian at least they have plenty of gas and oil, that Ukraine can afford unlike now, what will the people do this winter and with inflation to buy what they need,it is a disaster coming "when you think you have lost everything, you will find you can still loose a little more"!!! they just want a better life, and believed all the Bravo Sierra there politicians put out number 1# rule if a politicians mouth is moving they are lying!!

If Iwere Ukrainian I would distance myself from Russia. They're a one trick pony (oil)and America are engineering that advantage away from them. As soon as oil rises the "frackers" will be unleashed and oil price down again. At sometime in the future It wouldn't surprise me if Crimea is handed back without a shot fired...in less than 8 years russia will be on its knees financially. if Ukr join eu Ukraine will be dictated to about "personal" issues, sovereignty issues . These aren't precious ,inconsequential luxuries....the Brits wouldnt have taken the risks voting to leave the eu nest if they were

Affordable gas and oil? If you recall, this whole mess started with Ukraine coming close to defaulting on their gas payments and the EU bailed them out. I would not call that affordable.

Yeah...I still think the Middle East is conspiring against Russia because of their support for Iran. Makes sense to me....they have dropped the price of oil so far and it's crippling the Russian economy.

Im pretty much agreed to all these posts about the oil..The Saudi's can get it out of the ground for $9 a barrel..There intent was to put the frackers out of biz which happened. Im pretty much in the know that it costs my fracking guy's about $30 a barrel to get it out of the ground so that worked. Also though, and interesting in itself is that oil is the Saudi's best weapon and equally as important as the fracking scheme they flooded the market and have kept it flooded to sink mother Russia ! So winner winner winner ! About Ukraine joining the EU, its the fastest way to join Nato which seems huge.. Im not so sure though after Nato just stood and watched Russia annex Crimea. Talk about hater's Russia will probably always put there nose into the ex Soviet country's. Russia see's the Obambam admin. and Nato as passionate, but rich compared to them. They have proven they will lie, cheat and steal blatantly and I don't see that changing anytime soon..Having in depth conversations with some of them and doing some business with others, I have witnessed it first hand.. It's like "beware of dog " ..

By boosting production, OPEC has dropped the price per barrel. That is how they control the oil market. It's quite simple. Remember the "gas shortages" back in the 70's? That was all the Middle East. Has little to do with the U.S. The only country Saudi Arabia hates more than the U.S. is Iran. If Israel does not bomb their nuclear facilities, the Saudis will. When Russia started sending support to Iran, they drew the line in the sand.

Ukraine's a long way away from being a member of Nato. Not wise to underestimate the danger Russia poses.Russia appear to be incredibly insecure about her security?? No one will invade Russia sheesh! America has golden opportunity right now to break russia economically.....50$ and lower oil price will eventually cripple russia. I hope Trump doesnt try to stop the process by trying to be mates with russian pres. More I see of trump more he looks like a people-pleaser who will naively try to befriend putin. Big mistake! when Russia on the skins of their arse thats when it will be safe for Ukraine...not before then. Keep oil under 50$ long enough and Russia will end up going cap in hand to America

you dont need to invade anyone,America already has an unlosable position in the international armwrestle....no need to fire a shot...just stop pissing about and use that advantage to bring Russia and co to heal. It's time to do it now!! Trumps way softer than he appears. He will be great domestically for America but he'll be soft and maybe even worse internationally. He thinks putin's admirable because he has an 82% approval rating!. Trump will be easily conned by putin into appeasing and even helping Russia out of the hole it's in...and he'll help him..I can feel it...it's time to disabuse the russian regime of any fantasies it has about restoring its former glory....keep oil under 50$ and when they come knocking for help give it on condition they get out of Donetsk and Crimea
