Everyone in Odessa knows it. Why haven't the foreign men who come here looking for love and romance figured it out yet? The following article give a pretty good picture of what goes on in Odessa. Pay close attention to the line: "Saakashvili has likened Odessa, known for its exquisite theaters and museums but also for its organized crime, to Chicago at the time of Al Capone."
The single biggest source of hard foreign currency for the Mafia here is the money foreign men donate to the marriage agencies where they can find an honest woman.
Kudos to those of you who found a good Ukrainian woman years ago. It ain't likely to happen any more!

I had to re-post this letter because I see that I made a typo that significantly altered the message I was trying to convey.

.......on the subject of hard currency,,,just wondering if those of you who have entered Ukraine through Odessa and/or Kiev airports have noticed any currency dogs?...those cheeky dogs that can smell money(not the therapy dogs that Uni students have been prescribed to get over the election result haha). ...any tips on which airport is smoothest for entry and exit regarding customs officials and maybe fines for minor document irregularities would be welcomed.

hsvgto. I'm not quite sure what information you are fishing for, so I can't give you a specific answer. The significant change I have noted concerning air travel into and out of Odessa is that the cost of flights has skyrocketed. When I left for the US last spring I had to take a bus to Kiev to get a decent flight and returned in September by the same route: Flight to Kiev and then a bus to Odessa.

thanks russophile ive alsonoticed the dramatic drop in airfares when entering Ukr through Kiev. What im getting at is when entering are entry officials chilled out and waving people through or do you notice 'tourists' being grilled ...being asked to open cases etc
