Picked up on an article on the web that Kiev might be considering a ban on speaking Russian in public by all citizens. Has anyone heard anything about this...
A friend that traveled to Kiev last year said all business employees were made to only speak Ukrainian at work. I find this a little bit of a surprise since every person I know in Odessa only speaks Russian.
How do you all feel about this?

Good luck enforcing that. It's like banning the use of Spanish in L.A. Not going to happen...

You would think that with all the problems Ukraine has that the 'powers that be' could find something more productive to do with their time. I assume that they have also budgeted and acquired the money to hire a 'Language Police Force' to keep 1.5 million Odessans from speaking Russian.

Russo, there are a few reasons "why" they want to speak Ukrainian other than the fact this is Ukraine..Remember Mr. Putin stating " the people want Russia to be the rulers of Crimea ", they speak RUSSIAN, their traditions are Russian etc etc.. So in a nutshell, he says everywhere the people speak Russian, it should be Russian territory !! And, I'm not so sure about the Russian language being here forever Mr. Scott.. My child is taught Ukrainian in school and no schools teach Russian anylonger.. They implemented that as soon as Putting remarked about the people speaking Russian.. So ya, for the next couple generations, the Russian language will thrive, but after that I doubt it.. That is if were not Russian citizens by then !!

I cant but help wonder how parents help their children with school work taught in the Ukrainian language if the parents speak Russian. Speak Ukrainian at school, speak Russian at home. Ukraine is always an adventure.....

Hi 67-- The language thing is no problem here. This is Ukraine with a language that is older than Russia itself! More than a quarter of a century have passed since Ukraine escaped the clutches of a greedy Socialistic empire! For many years now, the school systems have been teaching first language Ukraine. Soon, all older ex soviets will have passed away, and ALL will speak their native language. Why should any country speak another countrys language-- ? Ukraine is distancing itself from the ANGRY BEAR! As a matter of fact, most, if not all schools today in Ukraine are teaching ENGLISH as their second language. Here in Kherson, I have spoken with many young persons in the markets with their use of English. I see NO reason for Ukrainians to be speaking in a foreign tongue. So much snow all around-- cant wait to go to USA for a spell, and crank up the old Chrysler 300 again. March 19th ima goin! Get to go eat some enchilladas, bar b Que, Red Lobster, etc. Glad to see some movement in this forum! take care ya'll!

By then, all the men is the U.S. will realize that Ukrainian women don't want to leave Ukraine and will accept the harsh reality that getting a Ukrainian wife is nearly impossible unless you want to move to Ukraine.
