" Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria. I''ll be traveling to Fujairah within a couple of weeks for a job interview. I''m an American citizen, my wife is Bulgarian, and we have a five-month-old son (visit our homepage at www.roesing.net). None of us has ever traveled to the UAE before. I have a world of questions about our possible move...but I''ll start with just a few. Are there many East Europeans, especially Bulgarians, in the UAE, and in Fujairah in particular? Are there any prevailing negative attitudes toward East Europeans? I have a feeling so many nationalities are represented in the UAE that East Europeans just fit in like everyone else, but it might be nice to hear from someone who knows. Are there any special concerns I should have for our son? Supplies we use in Europe that might not be available in the UAE, taboos we might unknowingly violate...? Friends who lived in the Middle East years ago tell me there''s virtually no socializing between expats and locals. Can anyone comment on this? Has anyone had any problems bringing 220V appliances to the UAE? I''m thinking of my desktop computer in particular. Thanks for any and all advice! Rich Sofia, Bulgaria "

" 220V is no problem. Most supplies for your son wil be no problem. If you can''t get them in Fujeirah, you can in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Fujairah may be different from Dubai, where I am, but as far as I know, it is difficult to socialize much with the Emiratis. They live such differnt lifestyles, and there aren''t many of them. You may work with one or two, depending on what you do, but you will no likely know any. remember, Emiratis only make up about 20% of the population here. Regarding your wife-- unfortunately, she may well be mistaken for Russian here, and the majority of the Russian women here are prostitutes. Again, this is Dubai I''m talking about-- Fujeirah is much, much smaller, and they may not have a large Russian prostitute population there. However, I''m American (and a rather frumpy teacher-type) and I frequently get taken for a Russian hooker, so there you are. I suggest you have a candid chat about it with someone in your prospective company. Good luck. "
