Greetings All,
I'm seriously considering employment in Dubai/UAE and would like to get an idea of the experiences of other African American females in the region, as far as treatment/stereotypes etc. I have several degrees but a bit skeptical with relying solely on the online job search-would much rather network. I'm not expecting the red carpet treatment, but want to know a standard (if there exists such) of treatment professionally. From San Francisco, with Love....

I lived in UAE 2003-2006. I knew and met many people from African decent, a few African American, one a single female. They did not have any negative experiences, what-so-ever. They were either working professionals (University or hospital) or married to one.

Mikado7 and Renecharles, have either of you found African Americans currently LIVING in UAE (especially Dubai)? I am an African American woman from Los Angeles (there must be something in the air in California) who has wanted to visit Dubai for years. I would LOVE to be sitting on the beach looking at the Burj al Arab this New Year's Eve.

i am spanish and i lived in Dubai around 2 years. if you have a bachelor or postgraduate degree and at least 2 or more years of experience you will not have problems to find job. you can search on www.bayt.com . you find too many american companies that sponsor you to work there, now becasue you are female you need to call the UAE embassy in washington to ask them about the visa regulations. you cant sponsor as woman your husband, brother or any male. means if you move with your husband he have to find the job to his employer sponsor u and your kids and you can apply as housewife visa to be able to work. as country is gorgeous, calm and is very open mind. you will feel you are in the east and west at same time. i worked in a hotel and also as spanish teacher, i will go back when i finish my bachelors in couple months. if you want to continue your studies you can do it they have too many colleges that are american like the american university and others well accredited and you are allow to study and work at same time. anything you can reply me
Good luck

Mikado7,
Any luck with your job search and decision to move to UAE? I'm curious about the job situation because I want to move there this summer; however, I do have an idea how life is in Dubai... My husband has been there 5yrs so I have visited close to 6 times during the past years. However now I want to move there to live. Economy is booming over there but I want to know if I can get a decent job with benefits, etc. Any luck on your part? Pat- new york

Hello cserrat,
How are you?
Soy latina y estoy contemplando la idea de mudarme con mi hija de 14 a Dubai. Mi esposo ha estado viviendo (el es egipcio)en Dubai 5anos ya.
How about if we exchange emails regarding employment. You are confident that a person with a college degree - or a woman with a college degree should be able to find a job... but how the pay is? I'm telling you this because I've been to the UAE and the job ads I have found and read pay a bit low for the cost of living in Dubai these days.
Any suggestions, ideas or leads would truly be appreciated.
Disculpas por el atrevimiento y espero saber de ti.
Gracias y chao! pat - new york

When I lived in UAE (2003-2006), although I did not live in Dubai but in Al Ain, many of my friends were wives of professors at the local university and they were able to secure positions with the local schools (some were not degreed nor certified). Dubai that may not be the case. I know of others who were hired by another employer and sought jobs elsewhere on their own, to no avail. When employers know you are the spouse of someone already employed in UAE, they will not usually offer you a complete package (housing, benefits, etc.). If, however, you are a professional (degreed individual in specialized and needed areas), you may have more luck in your job search though it may take awhile. Don't depend solely on the classified ads for a job.
Some of those women I knew were degreed professionals, too, and found positions in their field difficult to locate. I have one friend who is a professor in a specialized field not available in the UAE, and taught K-12; and is now the school's principal! Good luck.

RE: Female sponsoring male. It is not true what cserrat says. A woman can sponsor her male spouse if she is employed first. At least in universities and hospitals that has been the case from my experiences. Sponsoring other family members outside of children may be difficult; elderly parents are allowed. An American does not need a visa to go to UAE so any other family member can go for a month or so on his/her own. It can be extended by simple methods (such as going across the border to Oman for a day).

There are many African-Americans in UAE. I knew a few while living there. I am sure you will be able to find many. They are not as plentiful as other Africans who became naturalized citizens and who are still African nationality, but you will find them. There are many groups via Yahoo groups you can join with members living in UAE. You may want to sign-up for some of them and ask those group members what they know.

I am also an AA female who would love to move to Dubai. I visited once in 2005 and fell in love. I work in the mental health field. I have been doing research off and on and I have found that many jobs want you to have a certain number of years experience in the Middle East. Has anyone else found this to be true?
I also have two school age children and have heard mixed reviews about the quality of education in Dubai. Does anyone have any feedback on that?
I plan to visit Dubai again this summer and would love to have the opportunity to meet other AA who may be there at the time.
Thanks!

I read your post regarding AA women living and working in Dubai. i was wondering how that worked out for you. I am contemplating relocating to Dubai but I would like to know what the general atmosphere is like. Has it been successful for you?

Greetings All,
A year late, but thank you for all the responses. I actually took a detour and went to Honduras for a year. Ok, now I'm ready to embark to the Middle East: UAE as a first choice, with Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia as alternatives. Does anyone have leads towards teaching opportunities in the region? I am degreed with experience.
Thank You.....

Hi - I'm a Washingtonian about to relocate to Kuwait. I'm eager to learn of other African-American female experiences in the region. Please share if you're still connected to the UAE Forum or the ExpatExchange. If you're still in search of work, let me know, and I can put you in touch with the American company I will be working for -
Cheers, Yolanda ;-)

Hi Mikado,
I read your post from Nov 09 and although i'm over a month late offering this info, I hope it can be useful. I recently checked out the American School in Dubai online. They offer a decent salary and a good expat package. I think you would really like it. They require a degree along with teaching certs and currrently have openings. In regards to being African American, the greatest part of expat life which 85% in Dubai are, is that most dont see color. Everyone is equal among professional expats. I am from the south in the US so I know too well the concerns you could have. Fear not, there is so much diversity here. It's a welcomed life.

I have recently applied, interviewed, and am waiting to hear back from TeachAway, Inc., a program based out of Canada, that is hiring certified, experienced teachers for the UAE Educational Council. Currently, they are staffing for Adu Dhabi, specifically 12th grade English. Teachaway.com is the site to check out; they are still hiring so now is a good to to contact. Blessings to all!

Hi Mikado7,
I was reading your message on Expat Exchange and wanted to know if you relocated to the UAE? I am a African American woman, 46 years old, recently visited Dubai in March 2011, and fell in love with the people, country, custom, language, etc. I am seriously thinking about relocating to the Middle East after I complete my Graduate program next year 2012.

If it seems like the salaries are "too low" you may not be accounting for the fact that jobs are scarce these days and your other options may be ZERO and still with a high cost of living to somehow manage. I mean, if you have brown skin in this world, these days, you don't have many other options knocking down your door! I'm looking at Hawaii and the South Pacific thinking the same thing - they may be the only places that will give me a job AT. ALL...with this skin colour and a bachelor's from MIT, a master's from Yale, a law degree and (well never mind the state of New York math teaching license because I'm fed up with the way people treat me about my competence in Math when I try to teach that, and I think I've wasted 35 years thinking I was going to be taken seriously as a Maths teacher anywhere, ever.) This is now 2016 but all I have to say is that if you are a dark-skinned woman with multiple university degrees you may be limited to where they will TAKE you and hire you. We don't have the whole world as our oyster. WE can't pick and choose which countries will take us seriously in our field! It may be that only because it's the Middle East and most other people look like you anyway - that you should just take it ... unless you are implying that you have "better offers" in the US and they are not going to sabotage you out of the job once you get there and they see that your skin is brown? That's why I looked into Hawaii - I'm tired of the mainland US doing THAT one to me "from Sea to Shining Sea." Just sayin - for me, places where the job pay is not commensurate with the cost of living have been the only ways I have been able to GET and KEEP jobs in anything resembling my field whatsoever. Teaching in the San Francisco public schools comes to mind.
