Hi, I'm new to Dubai, I came here by myself to start a new job. I have been here 3 weeks and finding it difficult to meet people, I AM NOT LOOKING FOR A RELATIONSHIP, OR A FLING! Sorry, just thought I'd add that to save any confusion. I am looking for friends to meet up with and maybe have drink, or coffee, or shopping, or sightseeing, movies etc. Just looking to meet some like minded people to hang out with, maybe there are some other newbies out there who are finding it hard to meet people and also looking for someone to hang out with and discover Dubai? - I'm sick of staying at home watching TV! I'm starting to talk back to it!

Hi there, I am moving to Dubai in one month. I think I'll be in the same boat as you actually...so would love to make contact with you and hang out together as single girls once I get to Dubai! I'm looking forward to the move, but also not knowing what to 'actually' expect until I'm there. Done plenty of research and working with a good company, so should be no worries...but you can never do with too many friends, considering my current count of them in UAE is '0' at the moment :) Paula

HI, I am not in Dubai yet, but will be in August. I thought that it would be a good thing to communicate with someone that is already there to help guide me during my move and be a friend to do things with when I arrive. Please feel free to email me. Cheryl

Hi Lile. I'm about to take a job in Dubai which is both exciting and scaring me somewhat. I am an American Copywriter, working in advertising. I'm not writing to "hit on" you or make any unwarranted single guy advances. It would be really nice to hear something from someone who hasn't just been there on business for 2 days or is trying to get me over there for professional reasons (ie my American boss who is selling it as shangri-la). If you can chat with me just a bit, I would be eternally grateful. And If/when (and it's moving along rapidly) I make over there, I'd be happy to buy you a drink or dinner to repay your kindness ; >
So...
Off the cuff, are you liking it there or just weird?
I am a little confused when I read that people are having a hard time meeting people. Why is that? Is there no easy social areas? Perhaps you don't love the bar scene which I could understand as I am getting too old for meat markets myself. I was told that it's like 85% expats. Surely that should make it easy right as everyone is in your boat?
How easy was it to find a place to live?
I hope my inquiries aren't to bold. I'm sorry if I am asking too much or you don't feel comfortable as we've never met. Tell me anything you care to.
I hope you find some ladies or at least cool folks to hang out with. I would certaintly hope for the same. The thought oif not meeting people is just about the WORST thing I could imagine in a foreign land and is the primary reason I like to travel and take adventures (taking a job in Dubai) in the first place. I wish you the best of luck and hope to hear back from you.
My email is ibutterworth@mac.com

Well... if the TV is your friend... this could be the start of a down hill slide... What part of Dubai are you in? I am in the Marina, there are several places to go and always something happening, I have brought several friends from overseas to Dubai, so we are a good size group. Where are you from ? Feel free to email me directly and look forward to meeting you. Peter

Hey all. i'm actually 44 but most friend are 30 something because i have more in common with them. Looking to meet some new friends and find out everything about abu dhabi from housing to a job as a paramedic to where to shop, go out, bring 2004 chevy trail blazer suv thats paid off or not, bringing pets, is the money my husband is being offered a decent salary there ? He will be making about 70,000 us dollars base pay so he will wind up between 70 and 80k us dollars a month and we're being given a 3k Dhs monthly bonus for housing or we can take the company apartment for free but i'm sure its near the airport and noisy.

"bring 2004 chevy trail blazer suv thats paid off"
I would discourage you from bringing the car. A) Chevy's do not wear well in this climate. B) It won't have Gulf specs (A/C, radiator, etc.) and you'll notice this. C) THere are GREAT deals on new cars and even better deals on nice 2nd hand cars. Sell it and buy once your husband has his residency.
"bringing pets" I would enlist the help of your husband's employer on this. You pet will need to produce a vaccine book that includes rabies in order to apply for an import permit. Pet movers are very expensive, and doing it yourself costs a bit less. I would suggest contacting a local vet clinic in the UAE to see what's involved and how much they'll charge. Sometimes that's the best thing to do.
"is the money my husband is being offered a decent salary there ? He will be making about 70,000 us dollars base pay so he will wind up between 70 and 80k us dollars a month and we're being given a 3k Dhs monthly bonus for housing or we can take the company apartment for free but i'm sure its near the airport and noisy." This is a tough question to answer since we don't know what your husband does, how much experience he has, or what the going rate is for his industry. It is, however, a very decent salary, and provided that you are not paying off massive debts at home you should be able to afford 2 modestly priced new cars, save a bit, and even take a nice annual holiday. If you didn't need two cars I would say you could save a great deal on that salary if you were debt free. There are also A LOT of western expats making much more than that, while there are tons of expats on much less. As for the housing, you're moving to Abu Dhabi, right? I don't think that allowance will get you more than a 1 or 2 bedroom flat, and definitely not on "the island" near the water. Take the company flat. Abu Dhabi is suffering from a sever housing crisis. You're lucky to have that option.

Thanks Mish for the reply !!! Our kids are trying to decide which of our cars they are going to keep here. I really want to live in Dubai at the Marina but that is about 100 miles from Abu Dhabi where my husband will fly in and out of Al Ain so we might need to stay in Abu Dhabi first. Is there water front housing there ? Know a good agent we could use to find housing ? I have a million questions and searching the internet as well. Hard to find good information vs " marketing " answers. I hope to meet some of you when i get there. I am not shy at all ! also, how much do Paramedics make in the hospitals there ? Any idea ?

"Thanks Mish for the reply !!!" My pleasure. :)
"Our kids are trying to decide which of our cars they are going to keep here." :) I just think this is a big expense for something the kids could easily make use of at home. There are great cars for sale-lots of new car incentives and great deals on 2nd hand models...cars you never thought you'd be able to drive.
" I really want to live in Dubai at the Marina but that is about 100 miles from Abu Dhabi where my husband will fly in and out of Al Ain so we might need to stay in Abu Dhabi first." Your husband will be flying in and out of Al Ain? I would suggest Al Ain as a place to live for 2 reasons: location and cost. You're housing allowance will go SO much further in Al Ain, though it is land-locked. You could get a nice villa for your husband's allowance.
"Is there water front housing there ?" There is, but Abu Dhabi is experiencing an housing shortage. Your housing allowance is similar to mine (I start a new contract in Abu Dhabi in August). I don't think you'll find a waterfront property in Dubai, and I'm about 100% positive you won't find it in Abu Dhabi on that allowance. Al Ain is about 120 km from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai....that's a long commute.
"Know a good agent we could use to find housing ?"
I'm in the same boat as yourself. I've lived in the UAE before, but never Abu Dhabi. We're starting a new contract, so I'll be hoping to find a good agent myself (or at least find a good property on my own).
" I have a million questions and searching the internet as well. Hard to find good information vs " marketing " answers."
I would try chatting w/ people on a lot of online forums. There's the UAE expat forum and Abu Dhabi women's forum-lots of great advice and opinions.
" I hope to meet some of you when i get there. I am not shy at all !"
We should arrange a night out once everyone settles.
"also, how much do Paramedics make in the hospitals there ? Any idea ? "
I was just chatting w/ my husband about this. I would say that a paramedic job typically goes to Yemeni or Iraqi-native Arabic speakers and all that. Philipinos would also have a shot. A non-Arabic speaking western woman would have a hard time getting a job like this. Given the nationalities I've just named, you can also expect that this would be a poor-paying job. Hope that helps!

Thankyou again for the reply.. Amazing that they would accept a low pay accepting person vs someone very highly qualified in pre hospital care. I do understand though, that they don't quite view or understand the skills of a Paramedic in the US vs abroad. We basically work as Physicians in the field. We intubate, defibrillate, administer alot of different medicines for cardiac calls, diabetic emergenies etc.. we don't just make the call and haul LOL. In Saudi Arabia we work as PA's. Physicians Assistants ( well the men do) i guess the difference in the culture may cost me working and doing what i love best. I am not sure at this point what type of work to look for. I will keep checking though. :) I just hate to be there not working and really hate to wait here at home for a Visa the 3 months it will take for my hubby to sponsor me.

It's not that they're less qualified than their counterparts in the US. Part of the reason is language. The other part has to do with the UAE's unofficial policy of paying based on nationality. "Why hire an American when you can get the same job done by a Filipino" is the basic mentality. Tragic, but true. I'd suggest you check out employment options in local hospitals.

Thank you so much Mish.. you're definitely a great source for information and i love this forum ! I meant no harm or insult to any other nationalities ( for anyone who read the forum ) in relation to hiring other paramedics vs american paramedics, i only meant that due to the fact that Paramedics in the US are allowed more advanced skills than most other countries. Intubation, Needle Decompression, Needle Crich, i think we also administer alot more medicines and are trained for Mass Casualty Incidents. We defibrillate, cardiovert etc. Basically we work as emergency physicians in the field. The only thing we don't do thus far ( although they are trying to add it to our protocols) is suturing. I dont agree to that because you should never close up a wound without proper sterilization and wound care prior. Also, if the wound is so bad that stitching is required to control bleeding, the time you take to suture, you could very well have the patient at a trauma center and in surgery. It's all about " the golden hour" Oops sorry i so got off the subject of this forum, my apologies LOL. Mish, do you know anything about MidEX airlines there ? freight company and "the compound" in Al Ain? Thats apparently where the apartment is located that his company has offered to pay for. It is supposed to be a new apartment.

Hi sassy,
I haven't heard of that company, though I really do like Al Ain (despite it being landlocked). Loved greenery, much less humidity...I'm sure you'll be quite pleased with the property. Flats in the UAE tend to be much larger than their equivalent back home.

A compound in the UAE is sometimes a gated community, but it's nothing that restricts your ability to leave and generally does not affect those who wish to enter (unless they look suspicious). Trips to Dubai take about an hour and a bit, and it's a pretty fast road. Depending on what size boat you were interested in, it might just be more economical to look into drydocking it rather than docking it in Dubai's marina. There are other marinas aside from Dubai Marina. They are likely cheaper, too.

Hello Mish and everyone ! We're still here.. in the US. I never thought i'd say this, but i'm ready to cross over the pond ! My daughter is headed off to college on the 9th of august, joining her brother who is a junior at the same university. Mike is still waiting to be flewn over. The company is still hiring other pilots and putting together a class and thats all we're waiting on. The house is on the market, we decided to find housing there ourselves, a villa perhaps and try to live on a budget so we can afford to do boating and traveling to other areas from there such as egypt, paris and Seychelles. How much is the average price for a villa in Abu Dhabi or Al Ain ? I saw pics of the apartment the company is willing to pay for, but i wasn't impressed. So we're going to take the small allowance of 36,000 a year and get our own.

I'm with you, Sassy. Ready to board a plane this very moment...in my heart if not practically-speaking (you should see the state of our living room at the moment). Abu Dhabi villas will set you back much further than that allowance will cover. Let's say your allowance is about 131,000 dirhams/annually. I would expect to drop well over 250,000/year on a villa in Abu Dhabi (I dare say...over 300,000). Al Ain is def. your cheaper option for housing.

If you are looking for new friends, new activities and fun interaction.. then you gotta join dance classes at Fondue Art Centre in Al Ghazal Mall, Jumeirah 1. For sure you will find something! We do Salsa, Bachata, Ballroom, Tango, Pilates, Bellydance, Samba, Zumba, Ballet and Body Ballet. Piano lessons, photography, make up, drawing and painting coming up soon. But I suggest the Salsa class: great, friendly atmosphere.

Hi I am (probably/very likely) to be coming to work in Dubai at the end of next Month and would be happy to meet up and see if we could be company for each other... Let me know what you want to know (about me) and I will, happily, provide more information/details. I do not have any hidden agenda, just that, like you, I'd like to make some new friends... regards Gary (garybrine@yahoo.com)

Hello everyone! I'm currently in the US and I'm looking to move to UAE, just wondering if anyone has any tips on where to look for jobs, Pref. the medical field. Thank you! :)
