Any ideas on how to find cheap car insurance in the UK? I have a California license with no points on it and I recently got a quote of £2300 per year for a group 11 car. I was only expecting around £800 per year. JF

" Jeremy, I have a Suzuki GV2000 (at least I did until I rolled it three weeks ago), and my insurance is around £650 through Norwich Union (0800 678 999 - service number, but they''ll give you sales, I am sure). Call for several quotes, as Insurance companies here are not exactly regulated, and I was quoted as high as £1600 by some companies before settling with Norwich (by the way, they have been very good about rentals, etc. during the past weeks). Good luck Sean "

Your California licence is part of the problem. Get a UK licence ASAP and you will be able to get cheaper insurance. If you are ex-US military or if one of your parents was a US military officer you can get UK coverage from USAA. They are about 1/3 the cost of any of the UK policies.

" Jeremy, Something that worked for me (upon the advice of my English husband) was to enquire about a no-claims bonus. I have my insurance through Direct Line (not sure of the number) and they agreed to give me a no-claims discount if my old insurance company in the states would send a letter on company stationery saying that I had not had a claim through them for -numberof years. I think this saved me about £600 per year. They were also not bothered that I still have a US license. Good Luck! "

" Jeremy, You might want to try: http://www.carquote.co.uk/ or http://www.carsource.co.uk/cic?ID=null for some online quote comparisons. I have USAA, but I believe you have to be connected to the military to take advantage of that one (US rates) Valerie http://valerie.nu Jeremy <help@expatexchange.net> wrote: Any ideas on how to find cheap car insurance in the UK? Although you can legally drive on a US licence your insurance will be cheaper if you get a UK one (as more companies will insure you). Another thing you might wish to do is to get a letter from your previous insurance company in the US saying how long you have been a policy holder and that you havn''t had an accident or made a claim in X years... If you are lucky (and my wife was for example on an NC licence)... they will take that into account and you will get a 40-50% no claims discount. Red
