" My husband and I just found out that we are pregnant. He is English, and I am American. We went to the NHS, and they said, great - come back in 12 weeks if you are still pregnant then. Call if you have any severe problems before then. This constitutes for us a HUGE cause for concern, and isn''t the way we want to have the health care for out first child, but we are feeling a bit stuck. Also, to add another issue, I have been having what seem to be problems, and used an emergency line for our surgery this weekend. The doctor prescribed bedrest and an immediate scan on Monday morning, but Monday morning has come, and the surgery won''t schedule an appointment for me to come in. We are worried, and seriously thinking about moving back to the states, but that will take some time, and it doesn''t solve the problem of not getting care here. Could anyone recommend an alternative, perhaps private care that would be preferrable to the nothing we are getting now. Thanks, Beth "

I am a bit shocked.. I have had both my children in the uk although I was quite far along with my first when I came but when I became pregnant with my second I got appointments right away.. I first saw my gp then went to the hospital.. I hope that you are able to sort out your situation.. What part of England are you in?

" There is very little that anyone can do should, god forbid that things go wrong with a pregnancy within the first trimester. If you are concerned ask to speak to one of the practice midwives who will be able to answer any of your questions and hopefully reassure you. Good luck "

The National Childbirth Trust is a large and trustworthy agency that offers all kinds of support and advice for pregnancy/early childhood. Have a look at their site: http://www.nct-online.org/ and give them a call. They should give you as much information as you need to get comfortable. There are many local chapters. Hope this helps. " Hi Beth, Welcome to the club! I''m now eight months pregnant and I faced the same dilemmas at the beginning of my pregnancy because I wasn''t deemed to be in any particular risk group (age, medical condition etc). I was lucky because I have medical insurance and was able to go private at the Portland Hospital (0207 3908112). They provide a free comprehensive list of obstetricians in London (different hospitals, NHS and private) . As it is expensive, you may explore the option of hiring a community midwife, who would provide continuity of care during your pregnancy. Contact your local branch of the National Childbirth Trust. You can e-mail me at bpinero@imo.org if you want further advice. Good luck! Blanca "

" Hi Beth, I hope everything is going well since you posted your message. My husband and I just found out we are pregnant too. I had exactly the same response from the health center where I registered. I met w/ the mid wife who really did not make me feel a whole lot better but is available when I call with questions. Have you decided do go private? We are going to wait and see how things go. I am not scheduled for a scan for another 5 weeks. It sounds like we are w/i a few weeks of each other, I hope everything is going ok for you. If you want to chat, email me at dianedn2@aol.com. Best, Diane "
