" Hi, we are moving to London from Washington, DC, in early August. Since my husband is a Swedish citizen, we can just move without getting work/residence permit first. I already have an EEA Family Permit, and I know I am supposed to apply for a residence permit as soon as I get there. But my question is, whether I can start working on that Family Permit while waiting on my residence permit and about how long it takes to get one. Help. Anybody married to a non-Brit EU citizen that was on the same situation? Your advice and pointers are greatly appreciated. I''ve been leaving messages at the British Embassy here since two weeks ago, but no answer until now. Thank you. "

" Hi Amanda, How is Washington? I moved to London from DC a year and a half ago. I watch The West Wing over here to comfort any homesickness pangs... Anyway, I can''t be of much assistance with the Family Permit stuff, since I married a British citizen and had to go through the whole marriage/work visa process, but I can say that I my dealings with the British Embassy in Washington were smoother than I expected. It''s strange that you can''t get in touch with anyone by the phone, but maybe if you could go directly to the embassy early one morning (midweek is best for smallest crowds) they could help you right away. Also, I''ve had to visit the American Embassy here in London a few times, and while it''s sometimes a pain with tracking down people on the phone, again, once I was at the embassy they were quite helpful and the process was relatively painless. Try the embassy web sites as well, maybe you can find a more direct number. In any case, keep me posted on your progress, and visit Lauriol Plaza, Cactus Cantina and Whatsa Bagel plenty of times before you leave -- there are no substitutes over here! Best of luck, Christine "
