" Hi. My name is Lisa, and my husband just accepted a job in London, and we will be moving at the end of September from New York City. I, of course, have lots of questions that I''m hoping to ask in this forum, but the main dilemma I''m facing now is my cat. Does anyone have experience with putting an animal into quarantine? The costs, ability to visit the animal, the conditions, etc? Also, once we decide to come back, possibly just a year or two from now, are the restrictions to bring her back into the US the same or stricter, or what? I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone has for me! Thanks so much in advance! "

" Cats coming from the US have to go through 6 months quarantine. To the best of my knowledge, they do not have to go through any quarantine on re-entering the US. As for cost, this depends on the kennel. The closest to London (that I have found) is called Willowslea and will cost around £1500 for the 6 months. If you are willing to travel a little farther out of town, the cost can be significantly less. Most kennels have advertised visiting hours, but they are generally business hours during the week and up to around 4pm on Saturdays (most I have encountered do not allow visitation on weekends.) When you visit, you have to do it inside the individual kennel for the cat (regulations do not allow the cat out of the kennel (individual enclosure) or contact with any other animals. This can be a bit cramped if you plan on spending some time with kitty. "

" The only exception to the quarantine (for those coming from the US) is for those pets coming from Hawaii, which is also deemed to be rabies-free. Unless you are moving back to the US State of Hawaii, there is no quarantine on the way back in to the US (I can''t remember if Hawaii waives the requirement for those coming from the UK). DEFRA www.defra.gov.uk (used to be called MAFF), the UK government agency that oversees pet quarantine publishes a list of places considered to be rabies-free (they are usually islands) and if you can establish your pet is coming from one of these places then it doesn''t have to go through quarantine - but if this applies to you check first to see what documentation is required - I think they also restrict the airline the ''exempt'' pet can arrive on (there is also an approved list of airlines).
