Hello ExpatExchange.com Members!

One area of interest for many expatriates is the need for assistance in
settling in and the management of culture shock. In order to identify
the information most needed by expats as they adapt to international
living, we'd like to know the biggest hurdles you faced in the process
of moving overseas.

Please help us in this project by answering these few questions:

When you moved to United Kingdom, what was the most difficult part of settling
in there?

How much difficulty did you have with culture shock in United Kingdom?

What would be the best, single piece of advice you'd give to an expat
(or soon to be expat) in United Kingdom?

Best thing I did was join the American Women's Club in London.

Hardest thing was finding a flat and all the rigamarole associated with getting settled in our flat. Second hardest was the horrible exchange rate that has now eased.

I also hate all the smoking on the street--hate it! I actually think that is why I have gotten sick more often than in the past.

Things I like best are all the markets and easy travel from London.

Hi, ctkathy!

Thanks very much for responding to our post yesterday!

In what ways did joining the American Women's Club in London help you? I can guess, but thought it would be helpful for others to know some of the specifics of what joining a group like the AWC - or that group in particular - can do for them. I'm a psychotherapist, and one of things we're trying to do now is help people understand the importance of such a decision!

Also - have you come up with any ideas or solutions to avoiding the smoking on the street. Having lived in Manhattan, I know what you mean, although I think it's probably a little more rampant in London!
