Retiree visa for U.K.?

My wife and I are retired American citizens living in New York City.
I am trying to determine whether or not retired American citizens who have ample assets and international health insurance would be eligible to obtain a retiree/ resident visa to live in the U.K. I understand that various EU countries have such programs (France, Italy, Ireland, Spain). We have assets of in excess of $2 million so there is literally no chance we would be a burden on government resources.
I have not been able to locate any official literature published on the subject. I would be grateful to know if obtaining the resident or long stay visa would be possible.
Does anyone out there have any information on this?

The terminology they use for what you want is 'retired person of independent means'.

The part that tends to discourage people is the requirement to demonstrate a 'close connection to the UK.'

But if for example through some contacts you can get a couple of letters from relatively well known business people etc. who will vouch for your love of all things UK, that can be good enough. It is a very flexible requirement in other words.
