Moving to Montevideo

Hi,

I'm moving to Montevideo in January. Having travelled there fairly frequently, there won't be a high degree of culture shock, but I do have a few concerns. First of all, I need to find a job, which I know is not easy in the times of economic turmoil. Ideally, I'd love to teach English - but the problem is that I can't set anything up before I get there.

The other concern is $$$. I honestly don't want to put my money in the local banks. However, if I were to rely on ATMs, I'd lose out due to the exchange rate (I'd want dollars, not pesos).

I'd appreciate any advice on the above topics, as well as any other helpful tips.

Hi,

Since there are so many things going on in Uruguay I would recommend the following. Have a trusted friend, transfer dollars periodically to a Uruguayan bank of your choice. Such as BankBoston, Citibank, ETC. That way you have less money at risk in Uruguayan banks. My personal opinion is that uruguay will not survive allowing people to have accounts in dollars and in pesos and being able to remove money in both currencies so I expect them to begin restricting the access of dollars in the next six to 12 months.

What about setting up a Uruaguan account as a electronic bill payee from your online account in the US?
Also, we're considering moving down there but my wife happened to mention today that she seems to remember about a 300% import duty on some things I'd considered bring with me (mainly mine and my son's motorcycles). Any guesses?
