Sorry for the somewhat late answer to your question, but I have only just found this website!

Sorry to dissapoint you but there is not really a shortage of IT people in Uruguay, because generally the job situation is pretty bad. In fact, there are many unemployed IT/software people in Uruguay, and for the people who are in work, the salaries can be very low indeed.
I'm English, working for a French technology company in Uruguay, which is an interesting mix.

If you are already in Uruguay, let me know.

TobyC, I was wondering if I could pick your brain... My spouse is transferring to Montevideo in Mid May to move his Department (a software support desk) to zonaAmerica and I will join him during this 2 year assignment. I currently work as a consultant for a Fortune 50 company in the states, but they do not have any international assignements in South America. I am currently Java Programming certified and finishing my UML certification. Is the market that poor in Montevideo, that I would not be able to find a company down there to sponsor my work visa? Are there any opportunities in education to teach? Just Curious. Would appreciate any assistance.

Really I think that it would be quite difficult - there are many unemployed I.T. people here; many programmers here are trying to look for work in the surrounding countries. Nevertheless I have forwarded your query on to a Uruguayan colleague of mine, and if he knows of anything I will get back to you.
